Micing a Leslie 122

Gods element

Recommended Posts

hey guys,

I have a very nice Leslie 122 which has been modified with a 250watt sub amp and an vintage ev SRO 15" subspeaker. The upper drive has been replace with an Atlas PD-60. It sounds extremely rich and loud...in my living room. I am getting ready to use it on stage at large venues and It needs to be mic'ed to fill space. I think I will put a right and left mic on the horns both panned in each direction. I havn't tryed this yet and I am curious as to how it sounds. As for the 15" sub, I have no clue how to mic it. Should I use a kick bass drum mic? The house sound has subs.

thanks,

joseph

Hi. Even with your modifications, the 15" woofer in a Leslie isn't really a "sub," as the crossover sends it everything below 800 Hz. A kick mic like an AKG D-112 or Audix D6 wouldn't be ideal for the full-range sound you'll want to capture. For stage use, a Shure SM-58 will work just fine, or if your isolation from other instruments is good, you might want to try a large-diaphragm condenser on the bottom - I sometimes use an ADK A51 on mine with good results. Back in dynamic land, I've also gotten good results out of an EV RE-20, mainly known as a radio mic.

For recording, I like a couple of C451-EB's on top , with one flipped out of phase at the board, and a U87 on the bottom.

Good old Shure SM-58s work fine for live use. If the house fronts are stereo, mike the horn stereo one at each front corner. You only need a single mic on the bass rotor. Windscreens on the mics and a scrim on the bass rotor will help alleviate the beating noise.

I guess I'm old school but I'm not a big fan of stereo miking of the Leslie, especially live. The Hammond/Leslie combo is pretty hard to f#@# up. If you put a decent mic on top and one on bottom, you're set, IMHO.

Look at it this way. If you're playing a Hammond and the Leslie is off to your left do you hear it equally in your right and left ears? No, you clearly hear it coming from the left side. The only time it would sound like that is if you stuck you head right in front of the Leslie, and who hears it that way? No one.

Yup. It depends on what you're looking for. I suggest you try it both ways, if you have that luxury.

Mike it up, then go out into the audience, have someone else play, and listen for yourself.

If it's the sound you're after, then there ya go - stick with it. But if it's not... if it's not.. then change it immediately or the earth will touch the sun. Your body will melt into an unrecognizable spot of molten mass and your soul will forever be one with eternity.

...kinda like this spider I just squashed (To beat, squeeze, or press into a pulp or a flattened mass; crush) laying there ...in the corner. :freak:

Ummmmmm, have a nice day. :)

Well, another thing you get from two mics on the horn is the smoothing out of the "motorboat" effect (made even worse if you pull the deflectors off).
