Yes, this is kinda off topic. But with some of the youth-challenged folks around here (Dave Horne and me), I thought you would find this web site interesting.

Enter your birthdate and it reports how old you were when historical things happened around the world.

I went to a site last week that gave you the #1 hit the day you were born. I felt so old when I saw the results. Are you ready...."How Much is that Doggie in the freakin' Window." So, man had only evolved that much. Geez. It might as well have been Waltzing Matilda.

You can't be that old, this is the Hip Hop version. I was stopped at a light just the other day and the car next to me had all his windows and trunk lid shaking to that song. At least I think that was the song, his speakers were blown so it was hard to make out the words, and it might have been B-itch. ;):D

I was only a year old when American Bandstand first came on the air. Today, Dick Clark still looks exactly the same.
I was watchin' Family Feud once and the challenge was to name a TV celebrity who hasn't aged over the years. I was expecting answers like Dick Clark, etc. For his answer, Brad Garrett says....Webster.

Gas, I knew better than to click there. Oh I feel old.... I was 1 yo when Tequila by The Champs came out, 4 yo The Twist, 7 yo JFK shot, 9 yo when Ford started putting 8 tracks in cars.

This means I have been through 6 generations of musical recordings and playbacks.

Where is the Geritol.

Hey guys, no need to put the rocking chairs out on the porch yet.

Keith and Mick are going back on tour again. And they are what 80? (At least they look like thay are in their 80s). And they are doing it with lifetimes of drug abuse. Imagine how long clean living souls like ourselves can keep it up.

Every year I am forced to do an age check. I teach at a college. The crazy thing about college is, every year I get older, but the students always stay the same age. It is easy to forget that things that were part of your life (a major part of your life) may have happened well before some of these students were either alive or sufficiently cognizant of life's events.

Some of the "biggies" I've encountered over the years: (1) kids who knew nothing about the Iranian Hostage situation; (2) life without cable tv and remote controls; (3) life without CDs (interesting that we all will have witnessed the rise and fall of CDs); (4) life without the Internet; and (5) the one that shocked me the most recently (and really made me feel old)...the Gulf War!!!! The Gulf War to me seems to be recent history, but these kids were all of 7 or 8 years old at the time.

AMAZING!!!

garrafon,

I saw bea arthur on a roast for Pamela Anderson Saturday night. It was either watch that or a SNL rerun. Man, has bea lost weight.

Andy Griffith was at UNC last week donating his memorabilia to the college. Of course, he's looked old for quite awhile.

But that's the thing - watching these reruns of The Golden Girls (my daughters love that show although I don't know why), Andy Griffith, and others may have you thinking that these characters never age.

But even Gilligan... man, Gilligan - damn if he didn't get old fast. Then he up and DIED last week. No fair. I guess Scotty sent for him, huh?

So people like Pamela Anderson - no wonder they spend all that money trying to stay young-looking... she's gotta. The poor girl can't act. And, bless her heart, she's got two books out, but they're full of fart humor. One of the roasters said that's two more books than she's ever READ. :freak::) Where would she be without her Double Deees?

And then there was Courtney Love. I had heard a lot about her antics but I never knew she was so ummmm... A.D.D. and as slutty as they say. One of the guys said that she was just like 'the girl next door'... if you happened to live next to a methadone clinic. :D

I dunno. As for me, I just try to stay out of the sun.

But the interesting thing is that I have older siblings... 10 years older. And they were big into music too.

But around here we listened to Motown. We called it a funny name though - Beach Music. And we had a funny little dance with another funny name - The Shag. (All the Britons are laughing their collective arses off about now.)

So, The Tams, Temptations, Four Tops... all those acts and many, many more defined my early years.

If you travel anywhere near Myrtle Beach, SC you can't help but find a spot on the radio where they still play this music exclusively. And if you're sharp enough to learn how to shag while you're there, you are guaranteed that every night will be a LUCKY NIGHT!:P

(If ya knows what I means.) ;)

I'm 55. I'm sure there are a few older guys here.

The one time I did feel old on a job was when I worked with a 22 year old (or so) bass player. He played very well, read very well and improvised very well. He didn't know a lot of tunes and did not know the changes for Sweet Georgia Brown. What do they teach these days at music universities. (I know the answer - Blue Bossa and Autumn Leaves.)

With one student I once felt very old when I mentioned a style of keyboard playing exemplified by George Shearing. George who? was the reply. Same university I should add.

No guitarists were harmed during the making of this message.

In general, harmonic complexity is inversely proportional to the ratio between chording and non-chording instruments.

Well, in my opinion, a good jazz player should know the standards... all of 'em... from the beginning of time.

And he should have a solid understanding of jazz history, all the players, their styles & contributions.

Knowing this will help him/her develop an excellent understanding of music theory.

And if one is verbose in the language and syntax of music theory, then it makes it a hellofalot easier to pull something out yer arse when you're performing at that cocktail party in the Hamptons and trying to improvise within the changes of that request you haven't played in years while the inebriated hostess who thinks you are the parking attendant is screaming in your ear that she wants you to move her car 'round front so she can have missy and junior run to the store for more champagne... or something. :freak:

Nope. There's nothing like a good music education.:P

Yup. Very sorry I missed it. I'm sure you all had a good time.

Sometimes my kid (my lovely daughter, Kathryn, who will one day go off to study music on a 4-year scholarship... (Well, I can hope and wish and DREAM, can't I?) needs help with homework.

Thank you for thinking of me Jim.

By the way, an old fart here, 5/22/48. You say "a good jazz player". Most of the kids don't even know what jazz is. My wife has a writing forum on line, and she happened to be speaking on line with one of her writing friends. Now this writing friend is currently going to school for her PHD, and lives 1 hour north of New Orleans. Both happened to be watching the musical special on Katrina, when a certain band (I don't recall the name) played some wild dixieland. My wife tells her that the dixieland is simply smoking. PHD girl: What's dixieland? Isn't that some place north of Louisiana? :freak:

Possibly the younger kids aren't into that vein of music?????
