Calumet
Ok, has there ever been a song that was so unrelentingly cheesy yet undeniably funky at the same time than "I Thought It Was You" by Herbie Hancock? When the verse starts it sounds like the theme from "The Love Boat"! But there are all these great Rhodes flourishes and stabs (not to mention a typically great solo)...and the chorus is very catchy and pretty and the changes are great. Then there is the whole vocoder thing (which I particularly like) which many people might hate. In the end, I love the tune, but if it wasn't Herbie, it might be a guilty pleasure, if you know what I mean. ITGITC
Great tune! Came out back in the mid-seventies as I recall. There was a DJ in Charlotte (NC) named Calvin & his show was Calvin & all that jazz. He played some of the greatest music. It wasn't mainstream jazz, but it wasn't smooth jazz either. This is one of the tunes he played. I recorded many of the shows on an Advent cassette deck (anyone remember those)? I still have the tapes today. They're a little dry, but they'll still play. Thanks for the memories. Tom "Music expresses that which cannot be put into words and that which cannot remain silent." - Victor Hugo
