I burp my baby boy in 5/4.....

Hi Folks,

Last night I was burping my baby boy and discovered I was doing it in 5/4 with accents on 1, 3 & 4+ (the Tarkus groove). I guess it could also be 10/8 with accents on 1, 5 & 8.

I wonder if in order to make him more well-rounded I should use other signatures as well, such as 6/8 and 4/4. Maybe a 3/4 waltz?

Comments?

Regards,

Joe

Whatever you do, don't burp him in 7/8. You will cause one leg to grow longer than the other and he will walk in circles for the rest of his life. You have been warned.

No guitarists were harmed during the making of this message.

In general, harmonic complexity is inversely proportional to the ratio between chording and non-chording instruments.

OK. In all seriousness...

When my daughters were babies I would turn on the cassette player with music for them to fall asleep. Of course, all the while I'm hoping that somehow this will sink in and their love for music will be the outcome.

That was almost 18 years ago.

Now, I've got one who is a first-chair clarinetist in her high school wind ensemble.

The other is playing violin and viola with the orchestra at her high school. At home she covers bluegrass tunes on her mandolin.

When I was a very short person and in the crib, my mother did the same thing. But at that time she would put on a stack of albums on the record changer. These were all Broadway show tune rip off albums (not the original artists) that she bought from the A&P (grocery store). Things like South Pacific, The King and I, Carousel, etc.

I was also into all things electric. Dad bought a Tandberg reel-to-reel tape machine. Then he bought another - this time it was STEREO. (woo hoo!) There were only a few prerecorded tapes available. One of those was The Music Man with Robert Preston. I listened to that soundtrack over and over. A few years ago I bought a VHS copy of that movie. The other day I walked in the house and the whole family was sitting in front of the TV watching it and singing along with every song.

My point? Music is cool. It's important to start as soon as possible. 5/4 time is great & listening Brubeck makes you that much wiser. ;)

Joe, you've got a good start. Now take your son to every concert you can. Go hear everything - jazz, classical, zydeco, blues, EVERYTHING. Why? Because one day your son is going to grow up. And he'll probably turn out to be a better musician than YOU. And when you first realize this, chances are good that you'll have to wipe that tear that's rolling down your cheek.

And that's why it's all worth it.

Thanks.

Tom

Tom (Mr. Car),

Thanks for your thoughts. We think he might be an artistic kid. My wife is a modern dancer, she performed at 8 months! So, I hope to be able to jam with the boy some day for sure. Maybe he can show me some good licks. When you read bios of great musicians, a lot of them grew up in households where the parents were mediocre musicians. Maybe my mediocrity is all he needs! Ha-ha!

With this thread I also hoped to inject a little levity into the Forum, which, I think, has suffered from a bit of gravity lately.

Joe

As a habitual drummer it is amazing how many toddlers I see that bounce up and down with the beat. While they can barely walk they will stand and bob to the rhythm as I play simple patterns on the slide. A couple of parents have been embarrassed to see their child start dancing to the rhythm, like they think that I think the kid learned it from watching them.
