Salyphus Posted January 7, 2003 Posted January 7, 2003 Has anyone seen this yet? Talk about a sweet portastudio! http://www.apple.com/powerbook/index17.html There's also a 12-inch version that can still house a SuperDrive http://www.apple.com/powerbook/index12.html FireWire2 and Airport Extreme!
Salyphus Posted January 7, 2003 Author Posted January 7, 2003 Almost forgot: it has a backlit keyboard which lights up automatically in low light. 64MB NVIDIA GeForce4 440 Go Graphics. Built in Bluetooth.
Bunny Knutson Posted January 7, 2003 Posted January 7, 2003 Wow. Less than 7 pounds, and it comes with Firewire. I'm impressed. Notice the price, starting at $3,300. It must be a Mac. ;) :p :D https://bunny.bandcamp.com/ https://theystolemycrayon.bandcamp.com/
Salyphus Posted January 7, 2003 Author Posted January 7, 2003 Good luck finding anything else like it for twice the price, smarty pants :D Also note the price of the 12" model.
Bunny Knutson Posted January 7, 2003 Posted January 7, 2003 You're right, Sally! The 12" version starts at only $1,800, and weighs less than 5 pounds. Nice. https://bunny.bandcamp.com/ https://theystolemycrayon.bandcamp.com/

Brakka Posted January 7, 2003 Posted January 7, 2003 That 12"-er is the same price as my 12" iBook was a few years ago. The PowerBook is a 867MHz G4 , mine's a wimpy G3 466 with a read-only cd/dvd drive and 10G hd. I can still do a lot, though. Not time for an upgrade yet for me.

Brakka Posted January 8, 2003 Posted January 8, 2003 Ooops, I edited my post while you responded. But you did say:
Originally posted by dino321: The 12" costs almost twice the price of my 14.1". Yep its a MAC.
I realized that you weren't talking about macs, though. You just go back to your Gates machine, and we'll all be happy. ;) :D
Bunny Knutson Posted January 8, 2003 Posted January 8, 2003 I just realized that my above post looks like I think that Macs are boring! Not what I meant. I meant that I think the Mac vs. PC debate is boring. But, you all probably knew that already. https://bunny.bandcamp.com/ https://theystolemycrayon.bandcamp.com/
Salyphus Posted January 8, 2003 Author Posted January 8, 2003 Well, there really isn't anything to argue about. Dino, you have fun with your Microsoft stuff, more power to ya. Geeks should appreciate this: http://www.apple.com/macosx/x11/ I just think the 17" PowerBook is the ultimate portable DAW. But where the hell is MOTU????

Rog Posted January 8, 2003 Posted January 8, 2003 Has anyone tried using Hotmail in Safari? I can't get it to work  First it said that javascript wasn't turned on. Nawledge Posted January 8, 2003 Posted January 8, 2003 what about the lack of L3 cache?, how good for music are these laptops really.
Salyphus Posted January 8, 2003 Author Posted January 8, 2003
High-speed architecture Power PC G4 The 1GHz processor on the 17-inch PowerBook G4 gives a tremendous performance boost with an advanced cache memory architecture that provides ultrafast dedicated memory with massively enhanced throughput. The 17-inch PowerBook G4 features 256K backside level 2 cache and 1MB of L3 cache. Accessing data from main memory is significantly faster than accessing data from the hard drive, but L3 cache which boosts processor function by providing phenomenally fast access to data and application software code gives this PowerBook G4 an even faster level of memory. The 17-inch PowerBook G4 comes with 512MB of DDR SDRAM. And thats expandable to 1GB of RAM allowing you to run several RAM-hungry applications simultaneously, or to store an entire graphics project in main memory for fast image manipulations.
I think they will be absolutely kickass for music.

Nawledge Posted January 8, 2003 Posted January 8, 2003 yeah the 17", i met the 12", I couldn't fit the big one in my bag along with my controller and audiop interface. but the 12" would be delightful.

I'd never buy a PC laptop, especially for audio. Someone said something about new apps? I don't keep up on Mac software. What's coming out? I really don't know what to put here.
deanmass Posted January 8, 2003 Posted January 8, 2003 There is another rumor that there is a product which is finalized and will be release within a month called iTrak, supposedly on the engine from the audio program they bought (logic?).. I still stand by the opinion that my ti 800 is he finest laptop I have ever owned. I am now lusting for a 17 inch powerbook. the little one with the DVD burner woudl have a great workstation.. All in all, more high quality, well thought out Apple stuff...
Nawledge Posted January 8, 2003 Posted January 8, 2003 Joachim P. Dyndale are you saying that the 12" g4 has 1mb? I thought it was only the 17"
