not coaster MODERATOR Posted January 7, 2003 Posted January 7, 2003 There's this guy I know who has taken Beatle songs, put his own lyrics in and is selling CD's. Obviously he has never obtained permission for any of this. How do I explain to this idiot that he's making a big mistake? What may possibly happen to him?

Tedster Posted January 7, 2003 Posted January 7, 2003 I dunno, Weird Al has made a killing doing that. Just kidding. "Cisco Kid, was a friend of mine"

I have no problem with ´official´ covers too, it´s nice to see a different spin of songs I like. But back to the topic. I see that a lot here in Brazil. I guess people figure a lot of people aren´t familiar with the american songs so they can just copy them. I had to show a few people the original Police recording that was plagiarized by a popular 80´s singer. (The song was ´So Lonely´, BTW) Nobody would believe me. There´s a woman here in Brazil that got very popular in the 80s doing TV kid shows - nowadays she got in the business of releasing kid´s CDs. Guess what? A friend of mine happened to buy a Barney CD at the same time she bought this woman´s, and she swears you can almost play the two in synch, they are that similar. And this wasn´t the 1st time she´s pulled this shit. It makes me nauseaus, actually. So many great musicians here, a long (and respected worldwide) tradition of music, but we get flooded with this shit, and customers who don´t give a shit about making these people millionaires. Jode Posted January 7, 2003 Posted January 7, 2003 I wonder if Shaggy got permission to rip off "The Joker" and "Angel Of The Morning" for his 'song' "Angel." "I had to have something, and it wasn't there. I couldn't go down the street and buy it, so I built it." Les Paul
Gabriel E. Posted January 7, 2003 Posted January 7, 2003 Shaggy probably paid for the licence. "You never can vouch for your own consciousness." - Norman Mailer
T.H. Posted January 7, 2003 Posted January 7, 2003 Shaggy did pay, and he stated himself that on his new album, he would not use any samples at all. They murdered him with royalties & mechanicals "This was on Hot 97.1 Oct of last year"

Roto Posted January 7, 2003 Posted January 7, 2003 I doubt anything will happen unless he sells a decent number of them, and I don't know how that could be possible. Weird Al has always gotten permission from the original artist.
