miroslav Posted January 6, 2003 Posted January 6, 2003 During a channel surf session tonight... ...I stumbled uon the MTV 100 Greatest Videos as they showed Michael Jackson's "Thriller" as the 1# video of all time. Hmmmm... I didn't see the other 100, so I don't know what it was up against, and even though it's a cool music video... ...I think there have been some more innovative/intersting ones done. As one example...most of the videos that Peter Gabriel does are way more intersting and cutting-edge than "Thriller"... ...but I have no idea what the MTV criteria was...or who actually "voted". So...anyone want to mention their choice for 1# of all time? miroslav - miroslavmusic.com "Just because it happened to you, it doesn't mean it's important."

Salyphus Posted January 6, 2003 Posted January 6, 2003 I was thinking the exact same thing. I really dig Massive Attack but didn't know they had any videos . Maybe they have a DVD or something.
Super 8 Posted January 6, 2003 Posted January 6, 2003 WOW! You guys should relax or somthing. You kinda trampled all over an ON TOPIC thread. Can't you keep it contained within one of your dedicated bastard threads? That way the rest of us don't have to scroll through 20 posts of the word "bastard" to get find something relavant. ON THE SUBJECT OF MUSIC VIDEOS, HOWEVER: I was always very impressed with the "Thriller" vid. Certainly MJ's best -those he's made some pathetic attempts to top it. But it does get me thinking about videos. Many musicians HATE videos, and I can understand that. But if lets see some lists of the of the best vids. Right off the bat, I can think of a few that I really like: * Ashes to Ashes -David Bowie * Human Behavior -Bjork * Individual Choice -Jean Luc Ponty Super 8 Hear my stuff here

Philip OKeefe Posted January 6, 2003 Posted January 6, 2003 Thriller's good, but I prefer Sledgehammer by Peter Gabriel, or maybe the A-Ha video for Take On Me or maybe the Cars video that ol' Andy Warhol directed, or maybe...

Go tell someone you love that you love them.
Rog Posted January 6, 2003 Posted January 6, 2003 The Best: Sabotage by the Beaties. Bjork and Radiohead also have consistently top vids too ... the one for Just stands out. "That's what the internet is for. Slandering others anonymously." - Banky Edwards.
Jedi Posted January 6, 2003 Posted January 6, 2003 Although I'm not a good judge of videos I think these were pretty good. Don Henley-End of the Innocence U2- Where the Streets have No Name Black Crowes-Sometimes Salvation Nine Inch Nails-Wish and(You guys are going to hate me for this one) Nirvana-Smells Like Teen Spirit was one damn good video. Tracy Chapman-Crossroads was also quite good. That's all that come to mind right now. Oh, Eric B. & Rakim's-Paid in Full is classic. So is Big Daddy Kane's "Ain't no half-steppin" and Public Enemy's "Black Steel in the hour of Chaos" "Night of the living Base Heads" and "Fight the Power" OK now I'm done. The Bear Jew Posted January 6, 2003 Posted January 6, 2003 Does anyone else miss the days when videos all had explosions, semi-nude chicks, guitars, Satan, bands playing rock music and burning skulls? Fucking stupid videos these days all have people in rowboats or extreme slow motion shots of stupid asses walking around. Dammit... blow something up! Get some nude chicks.... Help a fucking guy out for a change, willya? \m/ Erik "To fight and conquer in all your battles is not supreme excellence; supreme excellence consists of breaking the enemy's resistance without fighting." --Sun Tzu
The Thrashole Posted January 6, 2003 Posted January 6, 2003 Semi-nude chick, blowing stuff up. Hmmm... sounds like a Wendy O Williams video I once saw. Reach out and grab a clue. Something Vicious My solo crap
The Bear Jew Posted January 6, 2003 Posted January 6, 2003 YEAH! YEAH! Wendy O Williams! She knew a thing or two about making videos. \m/ Erik "To fight and conquer in all your battles is not supreme excellence; supreme excellence consists of breaking the enemy's resistance without fighting." --Sun Tzu
miroslav Posted January 6, 2003 Author Posted January 6, 2003 What I find is that most music videos have little or nothing to do with the theme of the song...or when they do...it is a poor attempt to "add" something to the music. Often the videos are more about: ...neat/new video techniques (OK, I can live with that up to a point)... ...just an ego trip for the artists or some of the band members... ...just an ego trip for the video director... ...a lousy attempt at merging a great song with soft porn... ...disguised as a commercial for the latest fashions... ...disguised as an avant-garde Broadway musical... ...or a real crappy combination of all of the above. But...what happened to the song? I think of ALL the videos that have been made in the last 20+ years... MTV would be lucky to actually find 100 really decent ones to show. :bor: miroslav - miroslavmusic.com "Just because it happened to you, it doesn't mean it's important."
miroslav Posted January 6, 2003 Author Posted January 6, 2003
Originally posted by CMDN: Wendy O Williams! She knew a thing or two about making videos.
Yeah...the Plasmatics... Now there was a...."different" kind of "band". I'd love to see a VH-1 "Where are they now?" of Wendy O and the Plasmatics... :D miroslav - miroslavmusic.com "Just because it happened to you, it doesn't mean it's important."
