I've been meaning to check this thing out... has anybody actually built their tube pre? How's it sound? What kinda gain/headroom does it have?

What quality and price range of mic pre are you thinking about building?

hey people thanx for all the responses. chaz, i'm more into bulding the pre-amp just to challenge myself, see if it will work, so i don't mind building an average one. I know you can build a pretty good quality pre-amp with costs under $15. lavi

It sounded okay, very similar to the little ART deals to my ear but easier to overdrive with not so pleasing results. So not a lot of headroom to speak of. The mic pre might be better in that respect as it's got a totally different front end (just to be balanced). Does anyone know what's up with PAIA? Haven't been able to access their website for a week at least.
