Duhduh Posted January 3, 2003 Posted January 3, 2003 What your favoriet mic for kick drum and floor tom? I own an AKG D-112 and despise it for kick drum. Its ok for a bass amp combined with a 57. Ive borrowed a Beta 52 and liked it quite a bit. The adjustment apparatus was pretty flimsy and actually broke! Ive tried a Sennheiser 421 on floor tom but thought it sounded pretty dull and I have a hard time paying that kinda money for that plastic mic. 57's on floor toms just suck ass and sound nothing like a friggin' floor tom. The Audix D-2 came close but was way to clicky. I tried rolling off the highs but it didnt seem to do the trick. Im a real sucker for very natural but large drum sound. And fortunately I am lucky enough that I work for a company that I can borrow just about any mic to try out over the weekend. "Meat is the only thing you need beside beer! fantasticsound Posted January 3, 2003 Posted January 3, 2003 Forget the D2 on floor tom. As you said, it sports too much click. The D4, on the other hand, can shine here. I don't think it carries the bass note of a bass drum, but for floor tom it works well. (I've produced pleasing results on kick with my D4, but it never quite lives up to a Shure Beta52 or the AT4054/ATM25 combination I heard at an AT clinic/Cinderella mini concert when I worked at MARS Nashville. It's easiest to find me on Facebook. Neil Bergman Soundclick fntstcsnd
Duhduh Posted January 3, 2003 Author Posted January 3, 2003 That was actually the direction I was thinking. "Meat is the only thing you need beside beer! Philip OKeefe Posted January 3, 2003 Posted January 3, 2003 I like the Audix mics on toms. I also like the 421 but it can be harder to place due to its larger size. I do agree that the Audix D4 makes a much better floor tom mic than it does a kick mic. As far as kick, I'm still a big fan of the E/V RE-20 in that application, sometimes (okay, usually) along with a LD condenser outside of / in "front" of the kick drum about 18" - 24", with each getting printed to their own tracks. You may want to try the ATM25 on toms too - they can work well. Condensers can also work well, but that can get a bit pricey for most people, and having a drummer hit a $800 AKG C-414 squarely with a hard stick hit definitely can ruin your day...
S_Gould Posted January 3, 2003 Posted January 3, 2003 As always, it depends on the kit, room, drummer and style of music... but having said that, I almost always get what I need from a 414 (ULS) and/or RE-20. Scott
Duhduh Posted January 3, 2003 Author Posted January 3, 2003 Ok. The RE20 is one that I have not tried. I just might give that a shot. I have a session on Saturday so I will try the D-4 for the floor tom. Now for the kick. If I can get my hands on a Beta-52 I'll go with that again. Twice its been pleasant. Now on the subject, I already have permission do audition a Vintech Neve 1272. Im recording a heavy stoner-rock type band ala The Melvins. What would be the best application for this pre. What is really gonna make this sucker jump out at me? I have a Rode NTK, SM-57's, Oktava MK-219, Oktava MC-012's, AKG D-112, and I'll have the Beta-52(I hope) and Audix D-4 and D-2. Philip OKeefe Posted January 3, 2003 Posted January 3, 2003 Well, it pretty much can work great on just about anything, but I use mine on kick and snare when tracking drums, sometimes for guitar overdubs, occasionally for bass and for vocals of course. I REALLY like the Vintech Dual 72 (1272 reproduction) and highly recommend them - great bang for the bucks! :thu:
Duhduh Posted January 3, 2003 Author Posted January 3, 2003 Yeah. Thats the one. Currently I have a Presonus TUBEpre and an Allen & Heath MixWizard running into a Digi-001. Is this Vintech really worth the money? I can get it at wholesale for about $975 + tax. But thats gonna take a while to pay off. Plus that eliminates quite a few other nessecary pieces of gear for quite a while. I noticed a HUGE difference running distorted guitar through the TUBEpre versus the MixWizard. The TUBEpre sounded much more natural and open. "Meat is the only thing you need beside beer! Big hunks of meat and BEER!!...Lots of freakin' BEER." But only you can decide if that's what's most important to you - you'll have to make your own gear proority list/ :) But I'd still like to know where to score one at that price! BTW, you're just in OC, so if you'd like to make a run up here to the sticks (Riverside), I'd be happy to demo our Vintech for you.
Duhduh Posted January 4, 2003 Author Posted January 4, 2003 Well, I can get it through my work. I get wholesale prices. I cant really "hook" anyone up or I could lose my job. They're pretty anal about that. Ya know, you've offered me to come to your studio before back when I was still contemplating the AW4416 over the DIGI-001 and I'd still love to come check it out. From your knowledge and the looks of your studio you seem to be successful and I'd love to sit with you for a while and pick your brain. Are you a beer drinker? ;) "Meat is the only thing you need beside beer! Big hunks of meat and BEER!!...Lots of freakin' BEER." "Hey, I'm not Jesus Christ, I can't turn water into wine. Philip OKeefe Posted January 4, 2003 Posted January 4, 2003 Is the pope catholic? Actually, I'm Irish, so it's normally a given that I'd be a beer drinker, but while I really enjoy a nice beer once in a while, I normally won't drink more than one at a time - never more than a couple over the course of a day, and even that is very rare. But if offered a Guinness or Bass Ale, I probably will accept. ;) If you'd like to come on up sometime, give me a call or drop me a PM and we'll arrange it. Maybe I can put on a little Musicplayer members only party if enough people would be interested. :D
Duhduh Posted January 4, 2003 Author Posted January 4, 2003 That sounds like a grand idea! "Meat is the only thing you need beside beer! Big hunks of meat and BEER!!...Lots of freakin' BEER." Duhduh Posted January 6, 2003 Author Posted January 6, 2003 Well, I can now tell you that the Vintech is worth all the hype. My tracks have never sounded so rich and thick. This thing is a magic box! Philip OKeefe Posted January 6, 2003 Posted January 6, 2003 Yeah, I thought you'd like it. :) It's amazing what a nice preamp can do for you. Everyone face towards Texas and bow to the greatness of Mr Rupert Neve. ;)
