USB recorded sound quality: good, great, other?

Recommended Posts

Don't know when it changed, but now they say USB can quality-record FOUR simultaneous tracks of audio like the M-Audio Audiosport QUATTRO . But nobody's saying how good the resulting tracks sound, or if there are any hiccups or other aberrations caveats. Anyone know from actual using? This little box could be an on the road convenience if it records to pro audio standards. This message has been edited by lovesinger on 10-03-2001 at 02:39 PM

I have been using this technology for around a year now. Well ok 8 months. The first set of drivers were useless! I have the tascam us 428 which is also a control surface, it has quite good converters and there are some decent templates for interfacing programs such as cubase logic, cakewalk/sonar.... I think that most of the problems with the usb audio concept stem from pushing usb to it's max coupled with incompatibility of the drivers. (this could improve with usb 2) The problems are almost always complex and hard to pinpoint but tascam does it's best to help. I can't speak for other companies support. I would advise that you not spend too much money in this area of technology because it's my guess that it will be abandoned soon. The 428 is still a good deal @ $479 because you get 4 24bit converters(48000) and a control surface and it is perfect for portable laptop work. For reliabilty though, i would go with something hardwired for now. Just my too sense

In a prior thread NIKA favors PCI's massively greater throughput and proven performance over the newly acclaimed firewire as well. I also thought that with USB's horse and buggy abilities re audio it might soon fade, and God knows how long USB 2's "bugs shakeout" will take, when it does step on stage. With this Quattro thing so boldly proclaiming its convenient 4-track-audio self I thought maybe some technological jump had happened that I missed.
