Alndln Posted January 2, 2003 Posted January 2, 2003
Originally posted by Mats_Olsson: Kudos to Bill Gardner!
Yep,all the way!Aside from the various hassles of elaborate copy protection that doesn't work in any-way-shape-or-form,some even impose bandwidth stealing(USB)and performance degarading(Pace)schemes.A company like Steinberg would well heed this lead, especially when their on going perpetual beta projects suffer from enough performance issues, let alone a USB dongle.I actually sold my liscence to some copy protected software that I once owned and will only buy now if only a serial is involved. While I have sympathy for soft companies suffering from warez/cracks,I have even less respect for companies imposing performance degrading schemes that are well known "not" to work at all,and just impose them anyway. When the latest version of Logic was released,a software dongle emulator was out within a week, then Steinberg stubbornly went with the same scheme fully aware that it didn't work, now they plan on releasing the upcoming Nuendo 2 with yet the same exact non-working-performance-degrading-scheme.It doesn't get anymore insulting for registered users than that,or more lame.Needless to say I already have a buyer for that license as well( ).With a non-beta-solid Sonar/Timeworks/Blockfish(free)and a multitude of wonderful serial only or free softsynths/plugs and with my pci/data i/o bandwidth in full no-problem-screamingly fast glory,I aint looking back.Any future purchases from me will only require a serial or I aint buying.I'm a;ready more than happy with everything that I have and can easily stay this way for a long-long-time.In a way it's sad that the warez/crack situation produced this mess in the first place, but I refuse to pay for the situations cosequences with my bandwidth or money.Wave Arts is now a consideration.Excellent and sensible move by them.Their stuff wont be cracked anymore or less now that it only requires a serial, and will be considered for purchase by "smart" users even more now that the end userwont be "punished". Philip OKeefe Posted January 2, 2003 Posted January 2, 2003 Check out the Sonic Foundry thread for a classic example of a 1) company hurt by piracy 2) hurt by their own bad business decisions 3) hurting its customers if if does go belly up because all the software requires a challenge / response...
ernest828 Posted January 2, 2003 Posted January 2, 2003 I love Waves and am glad they moved beyond this challenge. What a pain in the ass. EJB
