alcohol
My daughter is going somewhere in West Africa to work for the Peace Corps and my wife and I would like to maintain easy communications with her. Question is - are there cell phones or Palm Pilot types of devices that can communicate across continents? If I could get any advice on this it would be greatly appreciated. Wewus432
Hey alchi: The big player in satellite phones appears to be GlobalStar . As you can see they only cover parts of N. Africa though. If they don't have coverage where she's going maybe they could tell you who does. Here's another link, look a little ways down the page and you'll see a contact for Africa Satellite Corporation
freddynl
Mine is working globally as long as there is a cell phone network. I use a nokia 6210, which is a dualband and automaticly finds the network available. So the only thing you need to find out is if there is a cellphone network in that specific country. If there is you just need a cellphone capable of doing what mine is doing (you need DUALBAND) and ofcourse a provider which has worldwide contracts. hope this helps.
