Boggs Posted December 29, 2002 Posted December 29, 2002 No, unfortunately it's not with my electric, but it is really exploiting the capabilities of my C980 Jumbo... I played a piece today at church using a plastic pen as a "finger-stick" on my the guitar using the plastic clip as a kind of dulcimer hammer... The guitar sounds somewhere between a dulcimer and a harpsicord when capoed at the 5th fret and played this way! Very cool effect and it can even get that multiple strike like you do with a snare drum... Very controllable. The guitar just sings from this percussive effect even when played without amplification this way. I am also experimenting with an alternate tuning (I believe it is playing as an open D... D-A-D-F#-A-D) and when the low E-string is detuned to a D, GAWD IS IT RICH!!! I am writing an instrumental tuned this way and it is sounding like something Jimmy Page would have done with Led Zepplin during their acoustic years when they did Middle East inspired vibes and I am incorporating "slap harmonics" into it as I have found that amplifying it slightly really brings out those harmonics! Thank you for showing me this technique, Mr. Keaggy!! Also, I am finding that I probably will never put Elixr's on it again as even these GHS Bright Bronze 12-54 acoustic strings are leaps and bounds better sounding than the Elixr's. More good news on the acoustic guitar front... Carvin now has available in their latest catalog a C980-12!! That's right... a 12-string version of my C980!!!!! They are selling it for $850... AMAZING! I am about to explode fro GAS now! I will likely get to play it when I go to NAMM in January. I haven't got the cash for it though... YET! Later, folks, and have a safe and HAPPY NEW YEAR!! Dak Lander Posted December 30, 2002 Posted December 30, 2002 Hey Boggs try DR Srings Rare Phosphor Bronze next time you string up that Cobalt. I use .010s and .011's depending on which guitar. I didn't like the tone of the original Elixirs & don't like the new ones either. I'd rather play the d'Adarrio EXPs for a coated string. They sound better than the Elixirs, on my guitars. The DRs give me a really nice tone on all my guitars and last as long, or longer than the d'Adarrios while costing less. Try 'em, you'll like 'em. Boggs Posted December 30, 2002 Author Posted December 30, 2002 I'll definitely check into that, and meanwhile, I edited my original post because I forgot a bit of it... Boggs Check out my Rock Beach Guitars page showing guitars I have built and repaired... http://www.rockbeachguitars.com
