Indian film soundtracks with cool Bombay strings?

Recommended Posts

Does anyone know specific soundtracks with those oh-so-wonderful sounding Bombay strings, those swooping, cool, arabesque strings that only Indian movies have? Or movies that just generally have really great sounding soundtracks? I especially am interested in the aforementioned strings, the funky so-called "brown-sploitation" soundtracks, and some of the older '60s and '70s soundtracks with sitars and flourishes and other fun stuff. I don't have any specific picks - but try using this code word - "playback singers" Indian cinema has a tradition of all singing and dancing, but the singing is dubbed. If you ask for "playback singers" you may get pointed in the right direction. Famous playback singers dub the famous actors. The wacky strings are kicking in the background. this is a bibliography of Indian film music that might have some useful references: http://chandrakantha.com/articles/indian_music/works_cited.html

I don't have any specific recommendations either, but if you have any local Indian delis near where you live, they often sell inexpensive cassettes and CDs. You can probably find what you're looking for and then some...

There is a program on cable every weekend called "Namaste America" that plays videos from Indian movies. All the pop songs there are from movies. Bollywood produces tons of movies, more than our own Hollywood. Only a matter of time before one breaks the way "Crouching Tiger" did. Production techniques are bizzare, they use way too much reverb (spring?) on the vocals, very low fi sounding. The female singers sing in a nasel voice that drives me nuts. In a bad way. Otherwise, I love it. -David R.

Ken, For your 60's & 70's music try any film with music by Maden Mohan. Any movie with his music should have great strings. If you're interested in some newer stuff try films with the music by Laxami Kant or Piare Lal. You can get a lot of these in the shops down in Artesia's Little India. Hope this helps, Michelle Grind Music & Sound

The Maden Mohan suggestion sounds very good! I'll check that out. We have some Indian music stores near by, but going there with some suggestions in mind certainly helps. There are a number of collections of Bollywood funk, some with the name Bollywood Funk in it, and others done by a group of remixers in two volumes entitled "Bombay the Hard Way". The first of these compilations features "brown-sploitation" funk, and in my opinion is more interesting than the second release of "Bombay the Hard Way". But it's the sweeping, lovely strings that I am primarily interested in. ------------------ Ken/Eleven Shadows/d i t h er/Nectar http://www.elevenshadows.com 4 music, travel, more! http://www.cdbaby.com/elevenshadows
