Jode Posted December 23, 2002 Posted December 23, 2002 It doesn't have to be anyone famous, either. Matter of fact, it would be better if it wasn't. Here are a few of mine, to start. "I think every composer has about three really good ideas. I don't care if it's me or Beethoven." Jack Bruce "Tell us who you are in thirty-two bars." Joe Evans on improvisation "Make mens' music, not boys' noise." James Carter "There are two kinds of music - good music and bad music." Duke Ellington "The blues comes from what's in your heart, not what's in your teeth." Bleeding Gums Murphy "Got time to breathe, got time fer music." Briscoe Darling "...but simple in its beauty, like a Telecaster." Jacob Thompson "I had to have something, and it wasn't there. I couldn't go down the street and buy it, so I built it." Les Paul
Jode Posted December 23, 2002 Author Posted December 23, 2002 "If every school would hire two more music teachers, we could hire two fewer police officers." Kurt Masur "Without madness or fantasy, music's boring." John MacLaughlin "It's fun being fat and having lots o' records!" Bob Say "Melody and harmony are like a woman, feminine, and rhythm is like a man, masculine. And as long as they lay down together, the bed don't matter." Carlos Santana "Dude, whatever happened to country songs about whiskey drinkin' and ass kickin'?" Butthead "I had to have something, and it wasn't there. I couldn't go down the street and buy it, so I built it." Les Paul
michael saulnier Posted December 23, 2002 Posted December 23, 2002 "Turn that damn guitar down"... Voodoo Chile, Jimi Hendrix. guitplayer I'm still "guitplayer"! Check out my music if you like... http://www.michaelsaulnier.com
Hippie Posted December 23, 2002 Posted December 23, 2002 Those are great quotes by folks who love music. On the other side of the token, have you ever met someone who has zero interest in music? They never bought a record or a CD, listen to sports or talk radio and just never got the whole music thing? These types are an interesting phenomenon. In two days, it won't matter.
Master Zap Posted December 23, 2002 Posted December 23, 2002
Make mens' music, not boys' noise." James Carter
Actually history has shown time and time again that you should make GIRLS MUSIC, not boys nor mens music. It's the music that in it's heyday is labeled as "yucky girls music" (e.g. ABBA) that is later heralded as the most classic and perfect of music ever made (e.g. ABBA). /Z
Abnorm Posted December 23, 2002 Posted December 23, 2002 A friend asked me in 1968: "How can you watch all these people having all this fun playing musical instruments and not want to get involved yourself?" So I finally got around to buying a guitar in 1974.
Jode Posted December 23, 2002 Author Posted December 23, 2002 James Carter was an old black guy who lived in my neighborhood in college. He used to come by and check our band out while we rehearsed. He had been a member in a clean-as-a-whistle doowop group in the fifties. What he meant by that comment was that your music should reflect a certain maturity, not that it was for the guys only. He meant that you should act like a grownup. "I had to have something, and it wasn't there. I couldn't go down the street and buy it, so I built it." Les Paul

ernest828 Posted December 23, 2002 Posted December 23, 2002 I heard it said from Sting but I believe he was quiting from something else. "Music is a frame for silence." Basically silence is the source of all music. EJB

I don't understand, but, then, I don't need to. As long as you have a passion of some sort. It's the ones who live their lives without a passion that are truly tragic. I think that there are a lot of people who are truly tone deaf in the world. It's nothing to be ashamed of, it's like being colorblind. That explains to me how some people don't get the music thing. I would rather doubt a colorblind person would get excited about certain types of art, either, for the same reason. "Cisco Kid, was a friend of mine"
jeffbayson Posted December 23, 2002 Posted December 23, 2002 I'm not the hugest fan of his music, but this quote stuck in my head. I'm paraphrasing from memory... "I want to write songs that people will still dance, fuck, and throw a Frisbee to years from now." - John Mellencamp
jeffbayson Posted December 23, 2002 Posted December 23, 2002 Here's another one: You can't always write a chord ugly enough to say what you want to say, so sometimes you have to rely on a giraffe filled with whipped cream. -- Frank Zappa
jschmidt Posted December 23, 2002 Posted December 23, 2002 "If you make a mistake.... make sure that you play it again and play it LOUD... that way the audience will think that you did it on purpose" - Thelonius Monk "Talking about Music is like Dancing about Art" - Unknown "The truth is that anybody who ever blew 2 bars of anything worth listening to...knew exactly what he was doing" - Duke Ellington

Oh well. In the spirit of the Mellencamp quote: "There are three things you can do to jazz. Listen to it. Dance to it. Make love to it. If you can't do any of those things to it, there's something wrong with it." Papa Joe Jones "I had to have something, and it wasn't there. I couldn't go down the street and buy it, so I built it." The Bear Jew Posted December 23, 2002 Posted December 23, 2002 "Ya'll's shit drops panties," the bassist from the band that opened for us last week. "Damn... I need a drink of water.
