Wewus432 Posted December 23, 2002 Posted December 23, 2002 I just noticed this model Mac. It's got a G4 processor BUT they are a good bit less expensive than the Imac and other models. I'm not sure what the difference between an Imac and an Emac is except price. I've seen them on Ebay for $700.00 to $1000.00 in fairly new condition. Originally developed for the educational market, the new Sweetwater catalog says a lot of audio people are using them. Any Emac owners out there?
Nraki Posted December 23, 2002 Posted December 23, 2002 Well,I own a Power Mac G4 in Seattle, and I'm typing this in Japan right now using my granma's eMac. My model(no,my grandma's) is G4 700 with a CD-R drive. <<>>> It could be compared with my power Mac G4 733. Be careful, everyone. I think the new iMac is far quieter than the eMac. Aside from the loudness, this is a very good computer. The 17 flat display is very good. OSX 1.2 seems very smooth. The multiple language system is perfect. The speakers aren't bad. But, let me know if your eMac is quiet...
not Cereal Posted December 23, 2002 Posted December 23, 2002 neihbor down the street has a g4 emac. i set up finale on it. went smooth, nice machine, but i wouldnt want one. i dont like all-in-one deals.
Wrave Posted December 23, 2002 Posted December 23, 2002 I thought Emacs was the premier text editor in Linux! ;) =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= ME: "Nobody knows the troubles I've seen!" Unknown Voice: "The Shadow do!"

Cowbell Posted December 26, 2002 Posted December 26, 2002 I think they're cool. The reason it's not that expensive is the CRT display, instead of LCD. Oh well...
not Cereal Posted December 26, 2002 Posted December 26, 2002 CRD = Cathode Ray Diode? thats a new one. whats next, LCT = Liquid Crystal Tube? :thu:
deanmass Posted December 26, 2002 Posted December 26, 2002 We got a herd of them in over the summer... Good bang per buck, but I hate the design, they are way heavy and appear to have a huge foot print. Side by side vs. an imac, the iMac blows it away for compactness. The iMac swivel screen is also very very cool, and I think a missed feature.
G. Ratte Posted December 26, 2002 Posted December 26, 2002 I think eMacs look cool... like a stretched-out iPod or something. Or maybe the LEGO computer. It's funny... I was unpacking an iPod the other day, and was struck by how much the packaging reminded me of newer LEGO stuff. Way Euro-modern, not much text so there aren't translation problems. And how the cables and earphones were packaged up like "astronaut food". That's something neat about buying Apple gear... it might cost a bit more, but you're sure not gonna confuse it with some generic PC stuff either. Some upscale, wine-and-cheese party stuff. Anyways, eMacs are a good deal. G. Ratte' http://www.cultdeadcow.com

I prefer communicating directly with my computer in its own terms, as opposed to having many layers of metaphors and images trying to hide it from me, all the while impeding the process with the guise of "simplicity". :) To each thier own, i guess. Franknputer Posted December 27, 2002 Posted December 27, 2002 Hey, why waste precious CPU cycles drawing a bunch of pretty pictures when you can use a text-based interface & apply the leftover processing power to DSP? :D

thisDude Posted December 27, 2002 Posted December 27, 2002 We have a few older style imacs that the new emac was modelled after. I don't know if they fixed it, but the old imacs were really noisy. I don't think they give you access to any pci slots so you can't really upgrade it and I'm pretty sure they only give you 2 dimm slots for memory. Save up and get a tower.

See, if your poorly rasterized graphics were merely text, you could see that it is actually K&R. Sitting atop the Camel Book, that is.... However, i give Chip +300 cool points for knowledge of the Great Knuth. Either he's been down this road before, or he's been beaten up by a bunch of pale, weakly computer guys like myself. None of us can really fight, so we employ big blunt readily available objects like 12 pound books that cost more than our current automobile. Dr. Seuss: The Original White Rapper . WWND?
