Traded in my newest toy... for a Newer Toy!

Last Labor Day I finally got a mandolin at Guitar Center for $350. I finally got around to taking it to a string tech to get the bridge adjusted and the action set ( it was over 2 times as high as it should have been). The tech pointed out that the thing was just...factory defective, he couldn't set the action any lower. Anyway I finally got it taken back to the Guitar Center, they weren't really happy but didn't give me any hassle, good on them.

Well, it wouldn't hurt to just stroll thru the Keyboard room on my way out, they never have anything I'd be interested in, right? Well, there on the wall was a Nord Electro 2, 73 key, for $899! I grabbed a salesman and found out some guy bought it two months ago and felt it didn't really do anything his synths already do, so he brought it back. Absolutely immaculate, although no manuals or pedals (I've just downloaded the manual, and will be experimenting with pedals I already have).

After reading the praises of the new XK-3 I was going to wait until after the next Keyboard B-3 shootout before buying anything, but at this price I figure I should be able to sell the Nord for at least what I just paid for it, and move up, if I absolutely had to. Doubtful so far, this thing is a blast! :thu:

You got a GREAT deal. I paid much more for mine, and am very happy with it. I also tried out an XK-3, but was not impressed with much difference sound wise. Depending on the type of music you play and the depth of your hard-core Hammond obsession over picking nits, you should like the Electro. Splitting a 73 note keyboard is definitely an advantage to splitting a 61. It's also easier to carry around. :)

Congratulations Botch! I am a very enthusiastic Electro user and it is probably my favorite keyboard purchase in quite some time! There are lots of good threads in the archives here if you ever want to check them out, or just start asking questions and someone will chime in! The amount of Electro converts is growing every month. It is really a great instrument. Killer deal you found! Enjoy!

Eric

Thanks everyone, I'm actually playing hookey from work today so I can play with this thing some more. Read the manual last night (dontcha love manuals that can be read in one sitting? :) ). I also experimented with pedals last night, I have a small Roland switch that works fine for the Rotor Speed, a standard Yamaha sustain pedal worked with the Sustain, and I had an old Ensoniq CVP-1 pedal that worked like a charm for the Swell (I'm trying to figure out why I have an Ensoniq pedal, I've never owned an ensoniq synth  ). Just need to call Sweetwater later today to get a case, and I'm good to go.

I'm also seriously considering changing a twenty-year-old modus operandi: The Leslie effect sounds so good, I'm thinking of abandoning mono and going stereo to the PA, I think that would sound, well, just too cool. My keyboard mixer is already a stereo unit, all my other keyboards have stereo output, we have plenty of extra channels on our PA; all I'd need is a couple more cables. Wotcha think?
