Henchman Posted December 22, 2002 Posted December 22, 2002 Having been enjoying the bitchslap sessions by MM., I thought I'd do my own diary type thingy, and post how recording the first band I've played in since leaving Holland 15 years ago. I will do this by posting links to MP3's of one of the songs, from it's start through various stages of production. We will of course be working on 9 other songs at the same time. This band started about 2 1/2 months ago. I guess well into the bitchslap sessions. And I guarabntee you, our recording will eb done, well before Bitchslap even finsihes it's first Mix. It will be more about the actual process of the production, than the nonsense that goes on with Bitchslap. who should have been kicked off the label eons ago. Followed by the "producer", and label head. IMDB Credit list President George Washington: "The government of the United States is in no sense founded on the Christian Religion." Jotown Posted December 22, 2002 Posted December 22, 2002 The opposite of the "Bitch Slap" session would be any real recording session in a real recording studio with a real band. Not a made up docu-drama by a bored engineer. :D Jotown:) "It's all good: Except when it's Great"

Bunny Knutson Posted December 23, 2002 Posted December 23, 2002 Looking forward to your posts & mp3s, Henchy. :thu: When mixing, don't forget to use plenty of "soar." And I'm available to do remixes. I'm an expert with the soar knob. https://bunny.bandcamp.com/ https://theystolemycrayon.bandcamp.com/

Henchman Posted December 24, 2002 Author Posted December 24, 2002 Ok, So this is the original song as recorded at an old Jam session, way befor I came along: Version 1 It was never my favorite, but the singer really likes it, and I thought, ok we'll give it a go. We sat down and worked out some parts for the guitars, but couldn'yt decide on a bridge, so we left that open, and this is were it ended up: Version 2 We are also rehearsing the same time, and I never felt the song wasz as good as the rest. So, we stopped playing it, untill we could work on it some more, just me and the guitarplayer. We then went in and changed the key, and I wanted to try and keep the original main guitar part, but try and somehow get a good melody going. Well, we're almost there, and with some new lyrics, it's starting to sound like a song. Version 3 Still not happy with the bridge yet. But we're working on it. Bunny Knutson Posted December 26, 2002 Posted December 26, 2002 Hey, Henchy, I like the song, but that ain't why I'm trippin'. Is this band MCM and the Monster? As in, the same MCM and the Monster that used to be a Bay Area band? With Miles singing? This is weird. I mean, I can't imagine another band with that name. And I seem to recall you spending some time in SF in the '90s. So, did you guys all move up to Vancouver together, or something? I'm still confused here. Anyway, the song. I like it, so far. I like what you've done with it. I think changing the key was an improvement, at least as far as the vocal is concerned. You took the melody out of "whiney" range into a more comfortable and pleasant range. It's coming along nicely. I suspect you have a live drummer for this project. Are you gonna go with a straightforward beat on this one, or are you looking for something more creative? Anticipating the next update~~~~! :thu: https://bunny.bandcamp.com/ https://theystolemycrayon.bandcamp.com/
Henchman Posted December 26, 2002 Author Posted December 26, 2002 Dbunny, The MP3 was improperly tagged. It's not MCM and the Monster. I actually worked with those guys. I re-mixed their first CD. And co-produced, engineered and mixed their 2nd CD. It was unfortunate that they never got a break, as I found thenm always very fun. And when they were shopping, the labels only response we're. It's not what we're looking for. The, about a year klater, a bunch of really bad rap-rock started to break. Gtoledo3 Posted December 26, 2002 Posted December 26, 2002 Hey, that was cool. The vocalist has a phrasing that reminds me of Thurston Moore sometimes. As far as the bridge goes, you might try ringing guitar strums at the start of each chord change, w/ a fast vibrato effect, like you get on fender amps. Or some kind of pad effect/background vocals. Of course I don't know what your ultimate concept is. Want mix/tracking feedback? Checkout "The Fade"- www.grand-designs.cc/mmforum/index.php The soon-to-be home of the "12 Bar-Blues Project"
Henchman Posted December 29, 2002 Author Posted December 29, 2002 So, now we've retracked the Bass. Added drums, wrote on intro and an outro. I have 2 drumtakes I'll be comping from. This version has the non-comped drums. Version 4 Next will be guitars. I want to be able to reproduce the stuff witha 4-piece. 2gtrs, bass and drums. This is why we're spending alot of time on the parts, and not thinking about strings, effects etc. I want it to sound like a band. Not a generic, cut-up and stuck together piece of generic rock trash. Now wether we succeed, that's another story. cg1155 Posted December 30, 2002 Posted December 30, 2002 Henchman, just heard version 4 and that is pretty cool, really diggin the vibe and groove of the song. Hope you're not offended but it has a very "early U2" vibe to it that I like. Casey

Henchman Posted December 30, 2002 Author Posted December 30, 2002 Here's some tech info on how I set-up to record: I used 3 Oktava 319 mic's on the kit: 1 Overhead, 1 to the right by the floortom, and one in front of the kick. Then I placed an AKG 414 in omni-mode between the Hi-Hat and the snare. All went into an old Tube Mccurdy 5 Channel Mic-pre, straight into the Fairlight. Bass went through a pair of ward-beck modules. One direct, the other was into a fender bassman amp, miced it with a 414 then into an , 1176, wich I cranked a bit hot and got a bit of distortion, but what the hell, it sounded good. Then straight into the Fairlight. IMDB Credit list President George Washington: "The government of the United States is in no sense founded on the Christian Religion." Uh Clem Posted December 30, 2002 Posted December 30, 2002 It is coming along - what a big change. Cool post. Nice to hear a vocalist without Autotune, but maybe don't make it so obvious ;) - these are scratch VOX right? Steve Powell - Bull Moon Digital www.bullmoondigital.com
Henchman Posted December 30, 2002 Author Posted December 30, 2002 Yes, scratch vocals. And I won't be autotuning. Henchman Posted December 31, 2002 Author Posted December 31, 2002 We did the guitars yesterday. Version 5 Next should eb vocals, and mixing. And maybe some percussion here and there. But now we're faced with a problem. We've only used about 14 tracks, and we have 48. What to do with the remaining 34. We tracked the guitars with a 414, ward-beck mic-pre. Guitars we're '72 telecaster. And a Les PAul. The FX on the tele we're the M5000 chorus and delay patch on the TC System6000. Uh Clem Posted December 31, 2002 Posted December 31, 2002 yep - I'm stupid like that :freak: , next year I resolve to do better :thu: Steve Powell - Bull Moon Digital www.bullmoondigital.com
cg1155 Posted January 4, 2003 Posted January 4, 2003 Now it IS a U2 song. I hope you have something special in mind for the vocals because it's shaping up to be a "look at these vocals" type song. The guitar tone is solid and fabulous but isn't exactly ear candy beyond your excellent taste in tone. Anyway, looking forward to vocals. Casey
Henchman Posted January 5, 2003 Author Posted January 5, 2003 We re-tracked the guitars. I wasn't happy with the sound. And we added a part we initially thought could go. We've also been working on the other songs too, so we have'nt done any final vocals yet. There's another song called "crashing down" in the same download directory if you want to check it out.
