Dak Lander Posted December 22, 2002 Posted December 22, 2002 I caught Robert Randolph & the Family Band on Austin City Limits last night. Freaking blew me away. I've never heard a pedal steel played that way before. I really like a good steel player & know about some good ones. This guy is amongst the best of them. Not traditional at all. Kinda took where Leo LeBlanc went with some of his non traditional playing to a whole 'nother dimension. Willie P Bennett is on this level with the Mandolin. Plays that sucker through pedals. He has his own albums but I first heard him with Fred Eaglesmith. Our Joint "When you come slam bang up against trouble, it never looks half as bad if you face up to it." The Duke...
patrick_dont_fret Posted December 22, 2002 Posted December 22, 2002 Yeah, it's interesting to see a bunch of folks walk out on stage wearing FUBU, only to play actual music... Doesn't happen to often. The one white guy, that always cracks me up...he's got to be their bitch. My friend met him in Tuscaloosa, Alabama at a concert. He got there early and sat at the bar area, and Robert sat down a few seats from him, and they eventually started talking about this and that. He said Robert is one of the coolest people he's ever met...and for good reason. Anyway, another mandolin extraordinaire you must check out is Michael Kang. Hailing from South Korea, he plays traditional 8 string mandolin, 5 string electric mandolin (strung like an 8, but with a low C, for extended soloing...like an upside down tenor bass), and electric violin. He plays for The String Cheese Incident. Check them out...don't go studio, they aren't worth crap in the studio, check out Carnival '99 or some equivalent in live choices.

ECBRules Posted December 22, 2002 Posted December 22, 2002 I saw robert randolph and scofield one night. He tore the house down. I hope you got to witness the stomp fest! This guy is da man for sure. I don't think the word cd really gives the music justice though. I'd rather see him live. John Medeski is like an old codger on that cd. Medeski's either just beating the keys like a 2 year old, or he's playing really bad church stuff which doesn't even resemble gospel, which is what the word cd was supposed to be about. http://www.kennyruyter.com/old/cowmix.mp3 <- Cowbell fever REMIX oh damn!!! http://www.eastcoastbands.com aka: ECBRules . thisOLDdude . keny . Kinda like how Donald "Duck" Dunn was the bitch. Not really a demeaning thing, really. He's just the only whitey.

Jotown Posted December 22, 2002 Posted December 22, 2002 I have been the only white guy in many bands, and I was never nobody's bitch. And I bet if you told Duck Dunn, or Steve Cropper that they were the bitch in those bands, you would probably be peeling the Fender logo off the back of your head right about now. :) Jotown:) "It's all good: Except when it's Great"
