Stock answers.

"Ever heard of Pokemon? I need to collect 'm all, in different colors."

Buy a rack synth. "See? That's no keyboard, it doesn't have keys."

"This one can make sounds the other can't."

"Just like you can't build a house with a Swiss Army knife, you can't build music with a single tool."

"It wasn't that expensive. Honestly. The 3 in front of the amount was just a typo."

"This is the newer model. It's 4 times better than the old one. However, I'm still keeping the old one because if I sell it I won't get my investment back, plus it's been with me for so long already, I just can't part."

"Look over there! Shiny things! *zoinks*"

Use large towels to cover new synths. This plan works for me, new gear has an "incubation period" of at least a month if you do it carefully. Put stuff on it so it looks like it has stood there since the dawn of time.

Hope that helps.

1. but this one goes to 11.

2. Because I want a new one.

3. So I can rule the world!

4. Would you ask Picasso why he needed more paint?

5. The new one can double as an off-road vehicle.

6. I was going to surprise you with a composition for you... now you've ruined the surprise.

7. Why do you need so many shoes?

8. Remember that Louis Vuitton bag I bought you for your birthday....

9. I'm secretly working for the governement - a new synth (insert brand) is the only instrument that the extra-terrestrials can communicate through.

10. this is the last one; I won't aquire any more gear that isn't needed after this.

zeronyne also had a brilliant one:

...and because my ever-patient wife eyes hardware purchases like a hawk, I bought a bunch of software synths.
That's so logical that it's like "I couldn't get in the vault because the safe door was huuuge, so I just drilled a hole in the ceiling" :D .

Start about something she wants. Like: shall we spend the weekend in ....? (fill in her favorite place)

Ofcourse she will give a positive response and will ask you what crossed your mind to take the initiatif. And then your answer must be like "I want to think in all rest and quiet about an important decision. Shall I buy a Yamaha or a Roland??

I am a lucky guy by the way. If the cash is there I can buy anything I like. She as well.

:keys: My Music:thx: I always wondered what happened after the fade out?

I'm in the same boat Pim. I have a very cool fiancee who is adamant about me purchasing a new kb - I'm strapped right now but she wants to see me happy. She is less inclined to cater to my sporting interests (fishing/hunting/archery/shooting) but this too shall pass. Can't argue with meat on the table.

My wife is very supportive and even offered to buy me a Roland RD700 after I bought the Yamaha P250 because of my enthusiasm for the RD700. I didn't take her up on her offer.

No guitarists were harmed during the making of this message.

In general, harmonic complexity is inversely proportional to the ratio between chording and non-chording instruments.

Dave, I don't know about you. Your wife must think you're really good in bed... or something. :freak:

How 'bout some tips for the rest of us?

(Ummm, no pictures please Dave! That would kill this thread immediately, I believe.) :D

Oh yeah, like that would work. My spouse would say "We need to get you down to the store and get you some new shoes - those shoes you are wearing look like you have slept in them under a bridge for the last week."

I need one to go with my brown belt.

It's cute.

It makes my butt look smaller.

I dont have any keyboards for Autumn.

These don't sound right since giving birth.

:D:D:D

My wife is also very cool about this stuff. She "made" me buy that B3/Leslie back in April.

I've said it before I always put my family first. I'll usually prempt an equipment purchase with a house purchase first - just bought my daughter bedroom furniture and a piece for the foyer. And now I'm working massive overtime on 3rd shift for something for me - probably a replacement controller of some kind.

I'm constantly buying, selling, swapping. I'm a fickle gear hound. eBay is my friend. For me, it is this constant shell game wherein I order something new, a package arrives and then the inquisition begins (not really that bad in actuality). I make this story in which I am "making money" off the deal...yeah, right.

Every so often, I tell my wife that "this eBay sale is funding the leather sofa" or whatever. This helps me with a few brownie points, but my wife is totally wise to my antics. In the end, she does not really give me that much grief. It is more like a running joke. I do get majorly busted if I have made any complaint recently, such as "we need to watch the funds this month," and then a Jupiter 8 arrives on the doorstep.

The basic internal strategy that I employ is for everything keyboard-related that goes out the door, some new gear usually replaces it. I don't like to diminish my gear stash, nor do I like to overspend. Generally, if I have something that I am not using, I sell it and buy something new that I think I might use. Over the past couple of years, I have shuffled through most all of the major VAs (and a few analogs).

I also use the tactic of a "home improvement" conversation and then tack on this quick "I'm doing some eBay deals so don't be surprised when UPS arrives tomorrow..." The one thing I can always "hide" is the road cases. I am a major road case junkie and everything must have a custom Anvil-style case. I just got a used Mackie mixer and will pick up the case tomorrow. I have a corner in my basement full of different cases and one more will not be noticed!

Probably the hardest piece of gear for me to "hide" was the Motif ES7 I had for about a month last year (thanks to Steve Fortner's review, I just had to have one - ended up with the S90, but that's a different story). That ES7 stuck out like a sore thumb compared to my other keyboards!

Regards,

Eric

Very wise. :D

With my girlfriend, though, there's no hiding. She's even started to recognize the sounds of my different synths *on recordings*. :freak:

They never do, but it's the thought.

ME: "So I can finish the song/CD/soundtrack I wrote for you".

Use song/CD/soundtrack with the price of the gear (i.e. $500/$1500/$2500+)

I was searching for something else in the archives and found this similar thread and my musings from almost 2 years ago. Funny how that post turned into a self-fulfilling prophecy, regarding how I was putting money into home improvements early in the year to pave the way for the gear frenzy later that year:

Explaining away the GAS...

new hardware is almost unexplainable now - no justification.

used hardware was handled with "but i'll be able to sell it for more than i paid for it", for a while.

but since i almost never get rid of anything, that doesn't work too well either.

softsynths are 'virtually' invisible - ha, ha, ha.

just delete that desktop icon, burn the box and the evidence is destroyed.

trying to placate by saying you'll spend an equal amount on her or the house only works if you follow through - think it thru before shooting off your mouth.

of course, on a forum where you're virtual, you can always pretend you say something like - 'mind your own business, it's my money and i'll do what i want with it'.

but we all know where that kind of bullshit macho-ness leads to in real life.
