Which form of monitoring would you prefer for live performances?

Let's dismiss headphones right off. Besides the aural disadvantages, they look silly and impede any movement.

In-ears annoy the heck out of me because then you are utterly reliant on the monitor mix to hear what's going on. I prefer to hear the instruments and their own amps to the largest possible degree, and use the monitors only to supplement that.

I used to think I was Libertarian. Until I saw their platform; now I know I'm no more Libertarian than I am RepubliCrat or neoCON or Liberal or Socialist.

This ain't no track meet; this is football.

I agree with coyote. I prefer room ambience (well, most of the time). Occasionally I'll have a gig in a glass-panelled room and in that case I use in-ears, set very low in order to hear subtle frequencies and nuances without becoming overwhelmed by poor acoustics. Again, the in-ears are set so low - just enough to catch a bit of the highs.

One glaring problem I've encountered with in-ears is if you're not paying attention to what's going on outside your own head, you tend to lose touch with the audience. Many artists have a mix from a mic capturing the "room" so they can hear crowd reaction. Somehow, it seems too sterile.

Should clarify that when I use the in-ears in those rare situations, I set them in without compressing the isolating sponges completely - using light pressure so there's enough outside sound creeping in.

I guess I could use earbuds or small front-firing headphones, but the in-ears are practically invisible.

Right off the Leslie. Respects to Don.

We perform without monitors, we're used to our mostly acoustic ensemble sound and the Leslie fits right in with that.

We are looking at some choices for our drummer in our worship service. However, our sound guys asked if we would consider other options as well. Loose my leslie to headphones? Riiiight?
Yamaha MODX8, Korg Kronos 2 61, Hammond B3, Novation 61SL MKII, Impulse 61, Roland D-550, Proteus 2000, etc......to name a few.
