Stands

Recommended Posts

Soon it will be time for a new stand.

So much from which to choose. Light, heavy, X, Z, room for one, two, three keyboards, music stands, clamp-on mic booms, shelves, 19" racks, and so on.

So, what works? What's worth carrying around? Anything to avoid?

I've always liked Quiklok stands. The last two I bought had slight problems though. I bought a WS550, which is AWESOME. Really heavyweight stand, great for Motif ES8. I bought the accessory bar for it to hold add on's, but they didn't weld the threaded shafts for the thumb screws on straight on one side. Pain in the butt to get in, but I got it to go together. Poor quality control. I just got a Quiklok "X" stand from Sweetwater. Really heavy weight. It could get hit by a truck and still work. One of the legs was slightly bent and I don't think it was from shipping. QC problem again.

Check out Ultimate stands and On-stage stands if you want a less expensive alternative. I saw an On Stage stand in a music store the other day and it was half the price of a Quiklok, not quite as heavy weight, but certainly heavy enough for most keyboards. Nice quality and can't beat the price. I haven't had a Ultimate stand in years, but when I owned one of their "A" frame stands, it was built like a tank, but better left in the studio in those days. Far to heavy to carry around. :)

Will you be standing or sitting?

I stand when I gig as well as practice. I don't like the quik-loks or x stands. When I gigged I usually brought two boards with me - I vote for Ultimate.

Pedals are also a consideration. The feet on the Ultimate tend to limit pedal placement, but it's not really an issue for me. I prefer sturdy stands.

I sit when I play so that I get good pedal control; also, I play from sheets much of the time and so need someplace to put them.

Of course, if you have $1,300 to spend, you might try this!

I saw that in keyboard magazine (probably the exactly same place you saw it)! Man if I had the money I'd...probably get some more gear. Although the thing definitly looks cool, although not so portable.

I just set up a standtastic 48" two tier stand. It folds up and comes with a bag to carry it all in. It is real stable and light. I don't gig with it until September 11th. Looks more practical than the quiklock z-stand it replaces. We'll see.

I prefer table-stands myself. Looks great (like a Rhodes or CP70 stand), leaves room for your legs and pedals (perfect place to put my laptop also), folds to a convenient package (unlike an x stand) and very stable.

I play only one board, so I don't need two tier stands, but the König & Meyer table stands have options for those things.

As Botch and daviel have pointed out, the Standtastic stands are great. No "x" supports under the instruments, and the support arms are more adjustable than any other stand I have ever seen. Height is adjustable from the very top of the leg all the way down to the floor. And the support arms telescope for a perfect fit no matter what keyboard(s) you have and have 4 tilt positions. I still have my 3 tier and 2 tier versions that I bought some 15 years or so years ago and they are still good as new. They take an extra minute to setup as compared to an X type stand, but they are rock solid once they are up and loaded with keyboards.

Personally I dont care for the Apex stand. They look cool but there is no good place to put pedals and the support is not that great especially for 88 note keyboards.

Just one persons opinion. Well, actually 3 people at this point.

Another vote for Standtastic here.

My tall 3-tier stand is perfect for me, and is the only one that meets all my needs. Yeah, it does take a bit longer to setup and teardown, but still not bad.

As an added plus -- I just discovered that the back support rails are the same as the front, which means that you can put keyboard supports there as well. Since the sax player in the Soul Shakers also plays a mean piano, I've ordered a pair of supports that I will put there. This way I can put a controller there, and on a couple of tunes we can have piano AND organ, with no muss or fuss for the sax player. Very cool. I haven't even tried this yet, the new supports just came in the mail Friday, and there's still in the box! (Busy gigging weekend.)

Where do you go to buy Standtastic stands?

Sweetwater doesn't carry them. The only places I can find with a web search are bogus spammed storefronts for musiciansfriend.com which I refuse to buy from because, well, because they have all these bogus spam storefronts that make it harder to find stuff from anyone else.
