Calumet
Man...I can tell it's fake a mile away. That's really disappointing. I know some folks will say that Herbie has always been on the cutting edge of technology and all that...but he's usuing "cutting edge" technology to imitate an instrument...not creating a new one. I guess I just don't dig that. I have never been impressed with what I have heard from the EVP-73 (or whatever it's called). In the hands of Herbie, I'm still not impressed. Heck, I think the Motif Rhodes patches sound better than the EVP does. (Bear in mind...this is a post about the sound , not the playing of the man. I guess that's why it bugs me so much. I want to hear Herbie play a Rhodes, not a clone of one. My band Thousand Houses: www.thousandhouses.com
cnegrad
You're absolutely right. I have both the EVP-73 and Lounge Lizard, and have no use for either. If it was legal to re-sell the Lounge Lizard, I'd do so in a second. (Biggest gear-related mistake that I've ever made.) But understand that Herbie has very much invested himself in the whole bleedng-edge-of -technology scene. It's part of his image that he's crafted for himself. Evidentally, it's important for him to be able to say, "see, all my keyboards are in my laptop". Personally, I could care less. My Motif ES has all the Rhodes I'll ever need.... hermanjoe
Funny, I really like the rhodes sound in Future to Future... My favorite rhodes sound came from Joe Zawinul. He really new how to make it sound unique. "Learn the changes, then forget them." -Charlie Parker

How'd he DO that? Is There Gas In The Car? PS I was into Weather Report before there ever WAS a WEATHER CHANNEL! hermanjoe
Gas, Check out wether Report's Live around the world disc. Some of those rhodes sounds are my favorite. I also like what Chick Corea did with his stage rhodes. I think his basic setup was a stage 73 running through a fender twin reverb with effects pedals. Calumet
I will say that the demos I have heard of the Scarbee Rhodes are very impressive. Way better than the EVP and L. Lizard. My band Thousand Houses: www.thousandhouses.com

burningbusch
Sadly, Herbie probably has some of the finest examples of the real Rhodes piano in his arsenal. Busch.

Superbobus
I dig the Scarbee too and my EQ'ed Rhodes from GarageBand KILLS the EVP88 in sound. What I don't get is that this one is built on the same technology as the EVP. What I do now, when using the GB Rhodes with a DAW, is recording something in GB, convert it to .aiff and load it into Logic. With Logic 7 this procedure will be gone. Bye EVP! Probably Herbie has an endorsement with Emagic, a.k.a. Apple. http://www.bobwijnen.nl Hipness is not a state of mind, it's a fact of life.
hermanjoe
Remeber that Herbie video is pretty old now. I think it was filmed almost 2 years ago. So things have changed for sure. Maybe EVP 88 was the best option a few years ago. "Learn the changes, then forget them." -Charlie Parker

hermanjoe
Well the very title of "Future to Future" suggests new technology and experimentation which Herbie is largley about. Herbie's used a real rhodes. he wrote the book on rhodes playing. Using the computers for synths and rhodes is all about trying new stuff. Not saying EVP88 is better or anything, I'd prefer a real rhodes myself, but I can see why Herbie would want something different. I´d sure like to know what kind of console that was...

Yes, but what good is new technology that doesn't surpass the overall results of the old technology? As I said earlier, it would seem that for Herbie's choice of Rhodes sound on Future-To-Future, it's more about image than substance. (Note that I take absolutely nothing away from the man's playing. He is perhaps the single most superlative player in recent memory.)
