RABid Posted December 20, 2002 Posted December 20, 2002 Looks like SonicFoundry is selling off products. Sonic to sell some of its parts. Robert This post edited for speling. My Sweetwater Gear Exchange Page
spokenward Posted December 20, 2002 Posted December 20, 2002 This would be a very useful investment for anyone of three or four Japanese hardware companies. It would also complete the trifecta of media software acquisitions. I wish them well. I like, use and pay for their software. Pat
jeffbayson Posted December 20, 2002 Posted December 20, 2002 I thought this thread was anpit something else. ;) Yeah, I've been thinking about buying Acid... I've been stuck using this Propellerhead Resin, which, after all, they put together by scraping together the remains of their last program. I need to buy some new stuff. Okay I think this thread is cached. Sorry for the bad puns.
Magpel Posted December 20, 2002 Posted December 20, 2002 Did you see the perpelexing last line of the story? "Sonic also is trying to land a federal homeland security con " ?? Check out the Sweet Clementines CD at bandcamp
Sylver Posted December 20, 2002 Posted December 20, 2002 I just saw MF is blowing out Acid pro 4 cheap. Hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm. I really don't know what to put here.

For a while they almost did away with information on Acid, SoundFOrge and Vegas. They were really pushing the services side. It is hard to remember but I think it changed back again a few months ago. Maybe they were trying to boost the products again before selling them off, much like a pro team playing an athlete they want to trade. I hope my Acid loop subscription is fulfilled. I think I have about 6 months to go. Robert This post edited for speling. My Sweetwater Gear Exchange Page

This seems like reasonable marketing. 4 is a significant upgrade that might have shipped a little before its time. Craig nailed it in his review when he pointed out that it sounds better. They have just released their third build of Acid 4.

I'm sorry, but Sonic is WAY behind the competition when it comes features, price, etc. Plus, their recent releases have only added a handful of features that only a small percentage of their users can use. Hardly worth the upgrade price they are charging. Someone please friggin' tell me why: 1) ACID 4.0 has surround, but Vegas doesn't 2) Same for ASIO 3) Why CD Architect is still a stand-alone app and doesn't work within Sound Forge. 4) Why it took SF years to figure out that they shouldn't have killed CDA only to re-release it after most CDA users jumped ship to other supported products. Had they listened to me and the thousand other CDA customers earlier I would have gladly upgraded CDA.
Nawledge Posted December 21, 2002 Posted December 21, 2002 did they fix all the problems with acid 4.0, it was so buggy that I stayed with acid pro 3.0, and then just about completely jumped ship to ableton Live, but if they made 4.0 work properly I'd be willing to pick up a copy since i'm a registerd user, shouldn't be that expensive. anybody running 4.0?

I have never tried VSTi's or MIDI in it. I was real put out with the upgrade price of $99 not matter which version you were upgrading from. I upgraded from version 1 to 3, passing on version 2 when it was out. Not long after I upgraded to version 3 direct from SonicFoundry I saw the same upgrade cheaper at Best Buy. This time I held out an picked up a full version of Acid Pro 4 with 6 extra loop CD's from Guitar Center for $150. I'll give my version 3 to a friend. I was disapointed when they dropped Siren. That was my favorite PC jukebox. File management was very elegant. The only problem was sometimes after using it Windows would not shut down properly. Robert This post edited for speling. Sylver Posted December 21, 2002 Posted December 21, 2002 Not many new features in Sound Forge 6.0, either. Oh, and another thing, When I first installed Sound FOrge 5.0, you could save files as MP3s. When I applied the patch to let SF work with WinXP, that ability mysteriously went away. Maybe it had something to do with the release of Pyro? Dickheads. I really don't know what to put here.
patrick_dont_fret Posted December 21, 2002 Posted December 21, 2002 Drugs is bad, mmmmkay. But no, I don't think I'll be buying any Acid anytime soon. My computer hardly runs, much less runs a program like that. But thanks for offering.
Duhduh Posted December 21, 2002 Posted December 21, 2002 And at a $1 a hit, no less! I sure love Acid! 3.0 AND 4.0! It works great on this WinXP machine. I really hope it doesnt go away. I use it i]a lot to do arrangements. Its soooo damn easy to use! "Meat is the only thing you need beside beer! Big hunks of meat and BEER!!...Lots of freakin' BEER." robmix Posted December 21, 2002 Posted December 21, 2002 Now is the perfect time for Digi, or MOTU, or god forbid even Apple, to step in and scoop up that technology. Think about the possibilities of using an ACID plug-in from within your favorite DAW platform. I've said it before, I think Sonic made a huge mistake not porting to Mac. Like it or not Apple has a huge share of the music market and not everyone is willing to buy a PC just for one app. I did, and it kind of pisses me off. This is not an anti PC rant, just my observation from the trenches. Rob Rob Hoffman http://www.robmixmusic.com Los Angeles, CA
Salty Tonk Posted December 21, 2002 Posted December 21, 2002 I'll take a sheet of 4.0 with some qua-loops and a fifth of gin.To go please. :D jgc2002 is not responsible for damages ,injuries and or death as result of above post.Side effects include nasuea, dizziness, dry mouth, vomiting, blurred vision, nervousness, loss of memory and in extreme cases sexual side effects. www.mp3.com/salt_creek
RABid Posted December 22, 2002 Author Posted December 22, 2002 I think Cakewalk might be a good fit. They already impliment Acid files into Sonar II. It would be nice to see them integrate Acid, SF and maybe Vegas. Robert This post edited for speling. My Sweetwater Gear Exchange Page
Sp3nc3r Posted December 22, 2002 Posted December 22, 2002 I bought ACID 4.0 about 3 weeks ago - dirt cheap. Not sure if it was part of this "sell off" (haven't read the link yet) I've been most pleased with it, it's come in very handy a few times siince I installed it Cheers! Anderton Posted December 22, 2002 Posted December 22, 2002 <> Won't happen. Sonar pretty much does what Acid does, I think Cakewalk would find it redundant. I've had mixed feelings about 4.0. When I first tried it, it was so buggy as to be unuseable. Just before my review for EQ was due, they came out with 4.0a, which solved a lot of problems. 4.0b has cleaned it up even further. As long as you're using Acid in the "traditional" way, without MIDI, it's still stable. It's just pushing VSTi and MIDI where things screw up. So far 4.0b is behaving well but it's too early for any definitive statements. (FYI to EQ readers: in my review I mentioned that update 4.0b cleaned things up, but it should have said 4.0a. I was under the impression the update was 4.0b but I was wrong.) I feel Acid remains a viable program; it still is the fastest way to put loop music together, and the whole surround pack concept takes it more into the multi-media realm. I was mixing some older Acid projects in 4.0 recently, and it sure was a smooooooth experience. But who would buy it, I wonder. Propellerheads seems committed to cross-platform operation...so does Steinberg. I think it might be more of a media company. The biggest mistake with 4.0 was not making it ReWire-compatible. I bet a zillion Cubase SX owners would have snapped it up, as would Reason fans. But zooming out, it's sad that Sonic Foundry is selling off the audio stuff, if that's indeed the case. Sound Forge was a breakthrough, as was Acid. I fear piracy has struck again...SF has learned the hard way there's no money in music software as long as people can download free versions from the web.
