Trading in gear.

Hey all.

I am a proud owner of a Yamaha S90...but my needs are changing and am thinking about upgrading to an ES8.

What are the ins and outs of trading in/trading towards gear? Would I be better off selling the S90 and buying? Or can trading save me some trouble?

Lookin forward to your insights.

You're probably better off selling it on Ebay than trading it. I've seen people get some decent money for used gear on Ebay, and sometimes wonder if people know what they're buying. The P90 is a great board, and someone that doesn't have the $$$ for an ES8 would be getting a nice piano.

Dealers really don't have the markup on new gear to give you very much for a used piece, so I think you're going to take a beating that way. There are also some places on the internet that take gear on consignment and resell it, but EBay is where I would start.

If you can swing it, you may want to keep the S90 and consider an ES6 or ES7 to go with it. You could use the S90 as a controller. Depends on how you plan to use it. If it is for gigging, I spent a lot of time belaboring the ES8 vs. S90 idea and ended up with the S90, due mainly to its more compact size and ES features I did not need for gigging (sequencer, sampling). The S90 soundset meets my needs very well and I really appreciate the compactness of it for being an 88-note keyboard with so much horsepower. If your main application is home studio, then the ES8 may be the ticket.

As for selling the S90, you need to consider that you will probably lose a little money, much like the "driving the car off the lot" analogy. Rather than taking the loss, you may consider keeping what you have and adding to it. What features of the ES really move you? Maybe you could get those features in another product and keep the S90?

BTW, I know exactly how you feel. Every time I go to Guitar Center, I play the ES8 and just love it. I really like the additional knobs and the ribbon...plus the new sounds are great. It would be cool if Yamaha would do the S90ES or maybe an S76ES with a 76-note weighted keyboard.

Eric

Thanks guys.

Eric, your options make sense. In fact I'm a little embarassed I didnt think of 'em (haha). I guess I was suffering from gear fog.

So - basically trading in gear is a bad idea at any rate?

Sorry, this is *totally* off topic!

Eric, I enjoy your signature... Recently, I did a little concert for friends at my place; one of the friends is an airline pilot. I asked him, "Well, there are more controls on my rig or in your cockpit?" He said, "You win". :D:D:D

ELP71 - Don't get me wrong! I buy and sell stuff ALL THE TIME. As another person stated, you will get maximum dollars out of eBay vs. trying to trade with a local store. If you really want to upgrade and the ES8 moves you, then by all means use the S90 to finance your G.A.S. The one thing I have learned over the years is to try and hold onto the trade candidate for at least a few weeks after the new piece of gear arrives. Oftentimes, I have been too quick to sell something and then regretted it.

Glad you like it, Carlo! I have a close friend that quotes all the Star Wars movies constantly, so I started stealing some of his lines. The original quote of "That's no moon. It's a space station" seemed to fit my purposes well. There is another person around here that took mine and reversed it to say "That's no space station. It's a keyboard rig."

Eric

I agree with you Eric. I think ELP has to evaluate the quality of sounds as well as the action of the ES8 compared to the S90. If he had a P250, which has great action and the best piano sounds, getting an ES6 would probably be more practical. Best of both worlds. My understanding is that the S90 has the Motif classic engine, and the piano sounds are at least equal, if not better on the ES8, and the other sounds are better than the S90. So if he kept the S90 AND bought the ES8, I think it would be redundant without any real gain in sound and capability. Right now you can still get a good bit of $$$ for an S90 on EBay. New ones are still 1899.00 and 1999.00 MAP prices on the WEB. Give that some time and I think the S90 will start to go down in value.

I hear what you're saying about selling something off and then regretting it later. Personally, I couldn't afford to keep everything I ever owned. I had to take money from the instruments I sold to get something new OR give it to the IRS!

Cheers guys,

One thing I don't understand about this forum is how it doesn't have a *robust* classified section. I think there is a thread somewhere in here that most people don't know about or use related to users making gear available to other users (no dealers) but it usually stays buried a few pages deep.

Its weird.

I mean, I hang out at an excellent guitar forum called www.thegearpage.com and there are classified forums on there that really rock ... I mean the gear listings change dozens of times a day!

There are probably some guys/gals on here that might be interested in your S90. Ebay is OK but it can be very risky and a hassle.

p.s.

how much do you want for your S90?

Great idea, MrVegas.

I've been looking to sell a PG-800 programmer for the JX-8P, but not too excited about the whole eBay thing after the many negative reports. :(

Wise advice. It is very easy to set up a secondary keyboard to play the piano patches on the ES. I use a SL-990 with my ES6. The combo was cheaper than an ES8. The difference in price between an ES6 and ES8 is $800. Can you get much more than that for the used S90? Even if you can there are other benefits.

The ES6 is easy to move around. Leave the S90 at home when you need to practice and just take the ES6. Also, if you have a multi-night job at a club you can easily take the ES6 home for practice and leave the big S90 setup on stage.

And remember, some redundancy is good. At some point a keyboard will go out during a job.

heh heh. When I was playing clubs I never did alcohol or drugs. It is not really a good idea to turn down an offer of a drink from a drunk, and you really don't want to tell them "I don't drink." So I would just point to my keyboard setup and say "Look at all of those knobs and keys. If I drink I cannot play, and if I cannot play I don't get paid." It worked very well and I never insulted anyone by refusing a drink or pill. :D
