I've always wondered what makes voices so different. Anyone here know anything about this? Vocal cord thickness? Why would they differ so much between any two people? I always wondered why the hell I just run out of room on top when all is going seemingly well...

to the guy who sings Boston and Journey - yeah - you're my hero too!

Well, basic difference makers are genre, general constitution (physical mass, chest size, etc.) and, well, mother nature  . The standard joke in my band is that it's just like the size and shape of your willie: Like it or not, you'll always have only so much, so all that is available is to make the best use of it...

Some specific stars have distinct features: Steven Tyler for one, for according to one voice coach I had he's got three vocal creases whereas regular humans have two. That is kind of freak, but surely accounts for some of his voice uniqueness.

Then again Steve Perry apparently is a regular human, much as his singing prowess seem out of anybody's range. The same applies to Paul Stanley's trademark brilliance of tone. And I wonder how many people out there were born with such precious vocal traits and never considered singing at all...

"I'm ready to sing to the world. If you back me up". (Lennon to his bandmates, in an inspired definition of what it's all about).
