RABid
Most of my keyboards and rack units use standardized 3 prong electric cables, as does my computers and monitors. Does anyone know a good source for getting cables of different lengths. I need a 10 foot cable for my XL-7 to use when I move it around, and I would like to have some 2 or 3 foot cables for units in my rack. Robert This post edited for speling. mound
you can get rolls of the wire and both types of plug ends at most any hardware store. Cut them exactly the length you want, strip the ends of the wires and screw them on. no soldering, very easy. I "cleaned up" the insides of my racks considerably by making IEC cables to the exact lengths I needed. -Paul "You look hopefully for an idea and then you're humble when you find it and you wish your skills were better. RABid
Thanks Carlito. That CablesAmerica link has 1, 3, 6, 10 and 15 foot power cables. When I get home I am going to see if all my rack gear has power connections on the same side. If this is standardized across brands (I'm not holding my breath) then I can put a power strip up one side of the rack and use 1" cables. Robert This post edited for speling. His father was head of the local electrical unities office. My dad had two brothers that also managed utility offices. My mother has two brothers that worked as electricians. I took electrical engineering classes in college and loved them. But for some reason, I cannot even do a good job of replacing a lamp socket. I dont know why but if I replace a lamp socket it works for a couple of weeks and then, poof. So for the average person this may be a good way to clean things up. For me, Im afraid of what I may do to my equipment. Seriously, there was a time when I was young that I thought my bedroom was possessed by demons. The lamps never worked. I would replace sockets and they would go out. I would replace bulbs and they would go out. I had frequently reoccurring nightmares about going into my room and it would be totally dark because nothing would work. No. I dont think I should be making power cables. mound
haha, I hear ya. But really, these things are very simple. The cables are color coded inside the outer sheeth, really all that is involved is wrapping three pieces of wire around three screws and tighten. viola. but hey, do what ya gotta do I'll admit that after I made all my own cables there was a hint of "oh man I hope this doesn't explode" when I powered it all back on! Sounded perfect. Even measured the distance between the plugs up front. After all 8U=14 inches so you would kind of expect a 1 foot cable to do all but the bottom 2U. However, when they say 1 foot they mean 1 foot from tip of its nose to tip of its tail. So when you plug it in it will only go about 8 inches, which is good for 4U at most. I know that is much less interesting than the daemons theory but last I looked daemons only come into play in gear that's actually on its way to a gig. As things are failing for you not just at gigs it can't be daemons.
