Looks like the industry has really gone on the offensive against piracy. http://www.forbes.com/markets/newswire/2002/12/16/rtr824801.html

What a bunch of pricks, picking on the little mom and pop shops.. I can tell you one thing, it will be a cold day in hell before Your Friendly Neighborhood Jeebus purchases another non-privately made CD.

I've gotta agree with TheJeebus. They seem to be completely unable to see the better ways of dealing with it...I suppose that's what you get when your mind is clouded with thoughts of money

Well, if these shops really were burning and selling copies of CDs I'm with the RIAA on this one. One might have differing opinions on wether downloading something from Kazaa is piracy or not, but for-profit piracy is deffinately BAD, BAD, BAD...

These mom and pop shops should know better. The people who manufacture and sell these ripoffs are the ones the record companies should go after, not Johnny College who is downloading mp3's off the internet.

I feel the piracy thing is a ligitamate concern, but the thing I have a question about is "mix" CD's. i do know that there are copyright and royalty issues that should be addressed, but I know quite a few DJ's who compile remix or genre CD's from CD's they've bought and sell them as an original product. While this is clearly not done correctly with respect to paying licencing fees etc in most cases. It is not quite the same as downloading and a CD and selling it under the pretext that it's in original form....or is it?

It's not their work, so who are they to create a compilation and sell it as their work?

man that first paragraph sounds like a bush statement on iraq. I also like how they addressed the mp3 thing as a sidenote. I absolutely agree that this is wrong, and if the ma and pa stores want to cooperate, they should stand out by NOT selling any major label releases. You know the big Nike / Foot Locker headline? Imagine record labels pulling their CD's out of repeat offending stores if they don't give the majors adequate shelf space. Now that would be something! And Like I said in an earlier post, these ma and pa stores are the same ones who go to best buy and buy a bunch of (next big hit here) cds and resell them at their store because the best buy price is cheaper than their wholesale price. It seems as if the record industry is angry at everybody. How to put all major labels out of business, by yours truly: You know, If there was a extremely rich lad who could buy half of the major radio staions in the country, that person would have enough power to shut the big labels down. Anybody feel like spending some money? Check this out: You buy as many major radio stations cross country. Then you either buy vh1 or start another nationwide cable station dedicated to music video and invest heavily (but do not buy) in a bunch of selected smaller record labels, put only the musically best acts in your spotlight, selected by their local presence and quality of music. Distribute all of the music free through a centrallized system with specially encoded mp3's to only allow 20 plays before self destructing. The music can be purchased through the same kiosk, and when someone purchases the record, you mail it to them. The people who believe in the music will stand forth and offer a fair price for the music. You must be committed to getting the artists a fair share of the royalties, and never let the price of any CD go over 12 bucks. And then the big record companies will be at their knees, and will swiftly begin tumbling down the etheral double black diamond of life that they are destined to eventually succomb to: Failure. Then you will be known as one of the worlds most powerful people. The one who put down the Big Labels? Sound Enticing? Just sign on the dotted line..... :D  :thu:
