Wow, for the first time, I just heard a friend's CD by this guy. Man, this guy is great. I am IMPRESSED. If anyone is a fan, can you steer me to what you feel is a good CD to buy?

Mr Massenburg himself I believe! ;) I hangin' out for Lyle to make it to Australia with his entire band! I saw him on TV about eighteen months ago on Sony/CBS Studios (something or rather). The players were all amazing and if my memory serves me, I think Alison Krause was in the line up! :)

And who is largely responsible for this excellent sounded recording?.... I forgot that George did this. I love the sound of that disc, Lyle's voice sounds right there ,like he's going to walk out right of the speaker. Nice drum and percussion sound too.

Buy 'em all because they're all great. Pick a favourite? Nope, can't do - they all fill a niche. -- Rob

I would have to say a good cd to start with would be "Step inside this House". It's a 2 disc set that has a lot of different styles on it, the playersd are slammin', the writing is strong and it sounds absolutely amazing. This 2 disc set really eased me into the rest of his collection, which can be quirky at times but that's just part of what makes him so damn cool!

I'll go with his 2nd album, Pontiac just because it's the one I've listened to the most in it's entirety. If I Had a Boat, She's no Lady (She's my Wife), and my personal favorite LA County. I'd love to see this scene in a movie! Sorry if this is long, but I can't resist pasting this in here
She left Dallas for California With an old friend at her side Well he did not say much But one year later He'd ask her to be his wife And the lights of L.A. County They look like diamonds in the sky When you're driving through the hours With an old friend at your side One year later I left Houston With an old friend at my side Well it did not say much But it was a beauty Of a coal black .45 And the lights of L.A. County They look like diamonds in the sky When you're driving through the hours With an old friend at your side So I drove on all the day long And I drove on through the night And I thought of her a'waiting For to be his blushing bride And the lights of L.A. County They looked like diamonds in the sky As I drove into the valley With my old friend at my side And as she stood there at the altar All dressed in her gown of white Lord her face was bright as The stars a'shining Like I'd dreamed of all my life And they kissed each other And they turned around And they saw me standing in the aisle Well I did not say much I just stood there watching As that .45 told them goodbye And the lights of L.A. County Look like diamonds in the sky When you're kneeling at the altar With an old friend at your side And the lights of L.A. County Are a mighty pretty sight When you're kneeling at the altar With an old friend at your side
My favorite is "Lyle Lovett and His Large Band", but "Pontiac" and "Joshua Judges Ruth" are very close behind. Lyle is a brilliant songwriter with a unique, expressive voice. I don't think he has ever made a bad album. There are a select few "country" artists that I like, including Lyle, Willie, Dwight Yoakum ("This Time" is my favorite), and kd lang (whose "Shadowland" & "Absolute Torch & Twang" are excellent).

By far one of the best recordings in History has to be Joshua Judges Ruth. I sat at home one evening, bored to tears, flipping channels. Came across Austin City Limits (Back in the early 90's). Lyle Flashed across my screen, so i decided to "Watch this Freak of Nature", he was about 30 seconds into "Church" and 20 seconds later i was picking my jaw up off the floor. At the end of the set, i drove (this was about 10:30 at night) to the all night record shop and bought this thing. Since then i have sat front row center for about 5 shows. I HATE country music and Lyle aint country! George M did the best job to date on Lyles stuff. The mood and attitude is unmatched on any cd anywhere! If you like the stereo mix, you shold hear what Massenberg did in the 5.1 mix! Your life will never be the same! Trust me! I have a hard time picking my favorite song of his, but the "Flyswatter Blues" is up there in the top 3, if not my all time favorite. His songs are so damn simple that you cant help but relate. "The road To Ensanada" got him the Grammy, and it is a fine cd, but JJR is his best. He holds (i am pretty sure) a degree in English and German. So he is always Playing on Words. Just look at the title of the cd.....Joshua Judges Ruth. Not only is it 3 books in the bible (back to back), but is also a Complete Sentence! His lyrics are always clever and many times you think he is going to say something....and he tricks you. For instance "Ive Been to Memphis" (i am a memphian too!) he says "Shelly has big ones, sally has some too, allison has little ones........................................that hate to go to school".......and what did you think he was talking about??? Lyle is one of the most gifted artists we have living today. If you have not checked him out Joshua Judges Ruth is the best Cd to start with. Dennis / DCMIX

I'm glad all you guys like his stuff too. I thought me and my friend were the only ones to liked his music. My favorite is still The Road to Ensenada. GREAT sound and I try to use this as a benchmark when I'm recording and mixing. Chris

Yeah, I had a very similar experience a couple of years ago although I don't think it was the same show. This guy is scary good. I have Live in Texas and the greatest hits one that came out last year. Hmmm, seems like I've got some good tips for my next purchase. bob

My favorite is the bootleg honeymoon DVD where he's doing Julia Roberts. Er, um, maybe I'm thinking of another couple... :D
