They generally have a true interest in the field we work & it's easy to weed out those who don't. (Of course, some in mail-order could be well-intentioned, too.) I see it as analogous to supporting another musician or technician you know rather than a stranger. Shopping by catalog's cool (& sometimes buying) but there's nothing like having someone who will actually go out of their way to help you (even if it may only be to retain your business when you're in a fix!
