dementia13
Wired calls this a "page-slap", when you answer a question with a link. But that's a big question, so you'll get a better answer looking up some things on your own than any one of us can give you. Here's two good resources to get you started: http://www.kvr-vst.com/ http://www.computermusic.co.uk/tutorial/features.asp The latter doesn't really have any specific tutorials about VST, but they use VST plug-ins for a lot of their tutorials and offer some for download. VST is a format that Steinberg came up with to enable Cubase to use plug-ins. These plug-ins can be effects or instruments (synths or samplers), and you can use them without ever leaving the sequencer. So, you could record a MIDI track and have it played back by one of these software synths, or record automation for an effect. A lot of software besides Cubase is VST-compatible. On PC, there is also a format called "DXi". Mac OS X has a native format called "Audio Units". There are others, but these are the three biggest. Some commercial products come in VST format, and there are many free VST plug-ins on the net.

Is that what VST stands for? I never even gave it a second thought. Nobody calls it that, its name is "VST" as far as everybody's concerned.
