Ben One
I was curious to find out which late 80s synth patch produced the steely/percussive sound featured, for example, at the beginning of Van Halen's "When It's Love" and also in other albums such as Tangerine Dream's Optical Race? The sound seemed to be most prevalent in 1988, and I find that I identify that sound with that era of synth music. EinTon
The DX7, perhaps? waves with varying frequency and tones with different pitch
eric
That sounds like an FM/Analog stack, very likely a Yamaha DX or TX instrument layered with an Oberheim. It has the metallic attack associated with the DX series and the warmth associated with true analog. Regards,Eric
Ben One
Thanks for the replies. I wouldn't be surprised if it was an analog/FM stack, and maybe the DX7 is on the right track, though this sound appeared several years after the DX7 had established itself, so maybe it is from a descendant of the DX7.
