The last chorus in Abacab.......what is that vocal effect?

Hey all, In the last chorus section of Genesis' Abacab, there is a sweeping vocal effect that I just can't figure out. Recall the words: (When we do it) you're never there. (When you show it) you stop and stare. (Abacab) he's in anywhere. (Abacab) It is most noticeable just before the words "When we do it" and "When you show it". At first I though it was a vocoded "oooh" sound that was faded in, then I thought it was reversed vocals through a chorus effect. Regardless, I'm trying to create a similar effect in a dance track, and my previous attempts have all failed. I can hear the sound perfectly in my head - I just can't get it to tape (or hard disk :) ). Any insight into how they did that? Is it a heavily processed vocal harmony (played forward or backward), or is it electronic by nature (eg, a vocoder or synth)? Any insight is appreciated, Wiggum

If I had my own webpage, I would post a .wav excerpt, but I don't think that would be legal. And I'm willing to bet that the snippets available on Amazon.com or cdnow will not cover that specific area of the song. Wiggum

From your *description* it sounds like a reverse reverb. 1. Reverse your track 2. Add reverb 3. Reverse back But that is based on your description ONLY! /Z

Reverb, (in this case a little longer than you probably need), that was recorded then reversed and played as a reverse .wav. Best of luck! - DJDM

Thanks a lot guys! I haven't had a chance to try this in the actual track, but I did manage to experiment on my laptop, and the effect is indeed close. With some effort, I think I can get to where I'm going. Thanks again, Wiggum
