LiveMusic Posted December 10, 2002 Posted December 10, 2002 I hardly ever watch TV. Maybe on average one hour a week. Housesitting recently, I actually watched a MOVIE. I go to a movie maybe a few times a year and always enjoy good movies. I just don't go much. Anyway, the movie I watched was something with Jack Nicholson and uh... let's see... oh, heck, pretty girl but not a raving beauty... she was a waitress, Jack was an author and the other major character was a gay neighbor. Jack's character has this quirky behavior where he can't step on cracks and thresholds and stuff, so he goes around them. He's a real meanie and bordering on psycho but deep down, he does good things. As I'm watching this movie, it's hitting me how damn good these people are. This is some terrific acting. Wow, it was good. Really clever script, too. So, what are some movies you think are just really exceptional? Since if it exists, I probably haven't seen it. Over the holidays, maybe I'll kick back with a few. BTW, as I was watching this movie, it struck me how actors are just like musicians. Artists. When I revel at the talent of a great musician, reveling at these actors in this movie is exactly the same. Musicians, like actors, truly are artists. Hey, I'm artsy. Never thought of myself as artsy. > > > [ Live! ] < < <
Rog Posted December 10, 2002 Posted December 10, 2002 That's As Good As It Gets. Check out Amelie, Requiem For A Dream (depressing though amazing) LOTR if you haven't seen it ... there are so many great films if you have the time to make up your mind about what kind of film you wish to see. PM me for more. "That's what the internet is for. Slandering others anonymously." - Banky Edwards.
The T Dot Posted December 10, 2002 Posted December 10, 2002 Check out Memento. I stronly reccomend this one.
Rog Posted December 10, 2002 Posted December 10, 2002
Originally posted by Chris Himself: [b]Check out Memento. I just felt the whole premise was incredibly contrived .... the film in the right order is pretty bland really. I don't like films which rely on gimmicks that much. Would you want to see it again and again? "That's what the internet is for. Slandering others anonymously." - Banky Edwards.
zzzzz Posted December 10, 2002 Posted December 10, 2002 The Princess Bride was one of my favorites and Empire Records is pretty good as well.
LiveMusic Posted December 10, 2002 Author Posted December 10, 2002 BTW, I like lots of kinds of films. I'd say mostly dramas, even some love stories like the aforementioned "As Good As It Gets", comedies, mysteries. Lots. "Something About Mary"... I rolled with that one. Rog, what is LOTR? Probably obvious. A movie I saw last year that I thought was sensational -- "Vanilla Sky." At the end, I remember thinking "Whoa... this is heavy duty weird." It just struck me as very unique and bizarre. "Lord of the Rings"... I hated it. Too much sensory overload for too many non-stop minutes. God, people must be de-sensitized. > > > [ Live! ] < < <
The Bear Jew Posted December 10, 2002 Posted December 10, 2002 Duke.... I'm with The Jesus on this one. The Big Lebowski is a killer. Very funny, and it really ties the room together. \m/ Erik "To fight and conquer in all your battles is not supreme excellence; supreme excellence consists of breaking the enemy's resistance without fighting." --Sun Tzu

The Bear Jew Posted December 10, 2002 Posted December 10, 2002 Maude Lebowski: My art has been commended as being strongly vaginal, which bothers some men. The word itself makes some men uncomfortable. Vagina. The Dude: Oh yeah? Maude Lebowski: Yes, they don't like hearing it and find it difficult to say, whereas without batting an eye a man will refer to his dick or his rod or his johnson. I could do this all day. You're out of your element, Donny. \m/ Erik "To fight and conquer in all your battles is not supreme excellence; supreme excellence consists of breaking the enemy's resistance without fighting." --Sun Tzu
Jeebus Posted December 10, 2002 Posted December 10, 2002 The Dude: They're gonna cut off my Johnson! Donny: What do you need that for Dude? Walter: Shut the fuck up Donny.
Jeebus Posted December 10, 2002 Posted December 10, 2002 The Jesus: Let me tell YOU something, pendejo. You pull any of your crazy shit with us, you flash your piece out on the lanes, I will take it away from you, shove it up your ass, and pull the fucking trigger till it goes...click. The Dude: Jesus... The Jesus: You said it man, nobody fucks with The Jesus.
The Bear Jew Posted December 10, 2002 Posted December 10, 2002 Dude: Fuck sympathy! I don't need your fuckin' sympathy, man, I need my fucking johnson! Donny: What do you need that for, Dude? ************************* Maude Lebowski: Do you like sex, Mr. Lebowski? The Dude: 'Scuse me? Maude Lebowski: Sex. Coitus. The physical act of love. Coitus. Do you like it? The Dude: I was talking about my rug. Maude Lebowski: You're not interested in sex? The Dude: You mean coitus? ************************ Tony: -So he says, "My son can't hold a job, my daughter's married to a fuckin' loser, and I got a rash on my ass so bad I can't hardly siddown. But you know me. I can't complain. Dude: Fuckin' A, man. I got a rash. Fuckin' A, man. ************************** Dude: Well, just take 't easy, man. Walter: I'm perfectly calm, Dude. Dude: Yeah? Wavin' a gun around?! Walter: Calmer than you are. Dude: Just take it easy, man! Walter: Calmer than you are. \m/ Erik "To fight and conquer in all your battles is not supreme excellence; supreme excellence consists of breaking the enemy's resistance without fighting." --Sun Tzu

Rim Posted December 10, 2002 Posted December 10, 2002 There are so many! I've done my best in giving a general genre so you can choose according to what you feel like, but they're all good quality movies, IMO. BTW, when I say "history" I mean more they're history-based and not exactly strict period pieces. Mainstream: Gladiator - action/history Beautiful Mind - drama/history Sixth Sense - horror/drama - but not gory Traffic - drama Apollo 13 - drama/history Almost Famous - comedy/history Not as mainstream: While You Were Sleeping - romance/comedy The Usual Suspects - action Amadeus - music/comedy/history The Commitments - music/comedy Out in left field: Fear of a Black Hat - music/comedy Clockwork Orange - fantasy/sci fi Reservior Dogs - action/violence Trainspotting - dark comedy Should give you a good start. I suggest you watch Beautiful Mind next. :) aka riffing Double Post music: Strip Down http://rimspeed.com http://loadedtheband.com
dohhhhh6 Posted December 10, 2002 Posted December 10, 2002 Probably the scariest movies with a shit ending are House On Haunted Hill and Thirteen Ghosts but again they have shit endings. Night Of The Living Dead was great check it out (get the version that's in black and white it's way betteer than the digitally remastered/ colored one). Ocean's Eleven was pretty good also (not a horrow movie). In Skynyrd We Trust
Jeebus Posted December 10, 2002 Posted December 10, 2002 Hey riffing! The Jesus loved Fear of a Black Hat, lol.
dohhhhh6 Posted December 10, 2002 Posted December 10, 2002 O i forgot to say Mallrats and Dogma! And last but not least the Evil Dead Movies they're so fucking funny. I tellin you nuthin but jack and shit and jack just left town (sorry if it's worng cuzz i think it's wrong someone plz correct me) This is my Boom Stick! In Skynyrd We Trust
Hippie Posted December 11, 2002 Posted December 11, 2002 A few favorite movies off the top of my head... Once Upon a Time in America - A freakin' masterpiece! The best movie EVER made. Excalibur - Awesome, 2 Thumbs way up! Slingblade (or anything with Billy Bob Thornton) Cider House Rules - Not bad for a 'new' movie Let It Be (must be a serious Beatles freak to fully enjoy) Kentucky Fried Movie -The Cult Drive-In classic Matt In two days, it won't matter.
Mark Zeger Posted December 11, 2002 Posted December 11, 2002 Not a lot of laughs on this list, but all strong movies. See "Glengarry Glen Ross"! Jack Lemmon, Al Pacino, Kevin Spacey, Ed Harris, Alan Arkin, Alec Baldwin, and Jonathan Pryce...all in this movie. Amazing David Mamet dialogue. Particularly painful to watch if you are in sales, which I am. Since there are fans of "The Big Lebowski" here, I'll recommend the Coen Brothers' first movie, "Blood Simple". Outstanding writing, and great acting including M. Emmett Walsh and Frances McDormand. I loved "Fargo", and also liked "Barton Fink" but that film isn't for everyone. "The Usual Suspects" is in a league of it's own. If you like Tarentino movies, you'll like "Suicide Kings". I never tire of "The Godfather Pts. 1 & 2". If it's on TV, I'll watch it (unless it's been chronologically rearranged as "The Godfather Saga").

Mats Olsson. Posted December 11, 2002 Posted December 11, 2002 Great movies mentioned so far, I like to add: Breathless (a 1961 b&w french classic, Jean Luc Godard at his finest. My all time favorite film. Old but not the least dated!) Happy, Texas (trivial and highly entertaining) Fight Club Fargo (another Cohen bros. movie) Broadway Danny Rose (My favorite Woody Allen film) Lilja 4ever (A very strong film that probably hasn't opened yet in USA, heavy stuff, highly recommended) /Mats http://www.lexam.net/peter/carnut/man.gif What do we want? Procrastination! When do we want it? Later!
The T Dot Posted December 11, 2002 Posted December 11, 2002 I second The Usual Suspects and Fight Club. Big Lebowski wasn't bad either. ;)
