Reverend Rhythm
I haven't hated my rhodes, but I do have weight and adjustment issues with it. I have a hard time getting the sustain pedal adjusted correctly. I wish I had enough room to set it up and leave it. David
linwood
Tough question. I've got 2 real Fender Rhodes and a Wurli model 200, so if I want real I can go there. It seems for me the word rhodes is like sayin' guitar. There are so many different sounds and textures I associate with it. Since the mid 60's about every five years or so, the rhodes sound has changed and inspired many great tunes. Someone adds a phase shifter, whawha, chorus, stereo vib, or does the fm thing with the sound and it's another animal. If I'm not using the real thing, I go S90,Mks 20, sy77 these days. Either separately or some sort of midi config.
ksoper
I hated my Rhodes for a couple of reasons--it was a heavy sumbitch, it never had the bite or bark that other Rhodes had, (although to be fair, I never had the dy-no-my upgrade installed) and I never cared for the action. For me, coming from an organ/synth background, the Rhodes action was a real bear. I never felt that I got musical results. The Scarbee sample, though, sounds exactly right, whether I trigger it from my RD-700 or my QS8. Just my opinion. k.

I can't play it within earshot of my wife though because its "soooo 1980's" according to her. I also really like the EVP73, it can really bark when you dig into it. I'll also dirty it up with a phaser or amp simulator plugin.
dementia13
I've owned a Rhodes and hated every minute of ownershi I told a local music store owner that I'd just bought a Rhodes, and he shook his head and said, "My condolences. You seem like such a nice guy". I love the thing, but I can see the other side: it requires maintenance, and the keyboard feel is very heavy. I don't mind that, it feels like a Rhodes to me. There's a real personality to that instrument, and it's not for everybody.

Michiel
Linwood, Is the mks-20 so special if you already have a s-90? Asking because I have a s-90 and consider buying a mks-
linwood
For me having both is important. it might not be for everyone here. It works for me. I'll never sell mine and if it were to crap out, I'd have to buy another one. Using it with other FM sounding synths creates a huge rhodes bed that works so well on ballads. Kind of 80's sounding, but I still go there. If you goto my site and go to the demo page and listen to the Laura Miller or Chris Duran demos I've got posted, you'll hear what the rhodes sounds is when you use the mks20 with something like the s90. These tunes are very pop sounding and in Spanish. I'm sure someone here will rag on them, but hey, sometimes it just is what it is. It walks in the door and I just give 'em what they want. linwood
Not apologizing. Guess I've been listening to Pat Martino's "Think Tank" CD too much the past couple weeks, so all my stuff sounds goofy and seems pointless even to me. Except for the money, of course...........
