Michiel
I just posted a question about a mks and mk-80/60 A lot of people still love the sounds of those boards. But what's your favourite e.p sound ever? My choice: Patch b-58 from the jv-880 module. Almost kept it for this sound only. Never found it back in another roland produkt. Most expressive for me "Early fusion" - s90 Also had a s-30 for a while and there where some pretty good e.p. on that one also.

I sold it to a friend when I moved to Europe and always regretted selling it. No guitarists were harmed during the making of this message. In general, harmonic complexity is inversely proportional to the ratio between chording and non-chording instruments.

Dave Pierce
Well, back when I spent some time on the real thing, I was just a kid and I totally took it for granted. That was a 70s-era Rhodes, and that's all I know about it. There's a patch on my Roland RD-700 that I just LOVE to play, and yet I seldom end up using it live. It's called "Rholitzer", and as the name implies, it sounds like a cross between a Rhodes and a Wurly. Has some bell-like qualities, especially in the upper octaves, but really barks too. Fun stuff. For live playing, I almost always use either "NY Rhodes" on the RD-700, or "Hit Rhodes", depending on the style of the tune. "Hard Wurly" is nice too. --Dave Make my funk the P-funk. Steve LeBlanc
hehe...well to clarify...I don't enjoy (and never have) playing ANY synthesizer EP sound...pretty much 95% of them sound lame to my ears. http://www.youtube.com/notesleb
Reverend Rhythm
On my RD-700 I use suitcase and wurlie, but I did add tremolo. It's not perfect, but it's too much trouble to haul and adjust my Rhodes. David
marino
A real Rhodes, or a program I did on the Kurzweil from Pyramid Sound's "Real Rhodes" CD (indeed), layering a Rhodes multisample with a Wurlitzer multisample, the latter heard only ay high velocities. Route the whole mess thru a Pod, a tube preamp, or a miked guitar amp, and serve hot.

Magpel
In my fairly limited experience, the best EP at my disposal is the Korg Z1 (and Oasys, and MOSS...) Wurli sound. It's really wonderful. Dirty, thick, responsive to velcity in a non-velocity-switch kind of way. It's a play-all-day kind of sound. Mark Zeger
In Lounge Lizard, I modified a Suitcase piano program, added a little phaser and "stereo vibrato", and use it all the time. It's on my KC Comp. 5 track. Though I never owned an Alesis QS8/7/6, I remember a program called "Rayz Roads" (sp?) that was very good. dB probably had something to do with that one. I recently tried the Kurzweil ROM4. Those Rhodes programs are outstanding.

That's a really nice sound, and not the only good EP in the QS soundset. Alesis did a nice job with the grittier EP sounds. aeon
A tie between the EP sounds of the Korg OASYS PCI and a Wurly patch that came with OS 3.x for the Clavia Nord Modular. of course, Scarbee RSP73 aint bad! Go tell someone you love that you love them.
iMember
Try out the Rhodes sound on the Promega 3. My favourite by far. Rumour has it that they sampled THE same rhodes that was featured on several Steely Dan records in the 70's. I have never got this confirmed, but it sure SOUNDS like it. *drool* Think before you think before you speak

Dan South
Flame me if you wish, but I *LOVE* the FM EP sound. So my choice would have to be FM7, possibly the cleanest sounding virtual instrument on the planet. The Black Knight always triumphs!

marino
Originally posted by SoundMeister: Which tube preamp are you using btw, Marino? I notice you use it quite a bit. I've tried several things in the studio: TLAs, Mesa Boogies, Fender Twins... The Mesa sound exceptional IMO. In my humble workspace at home, I don't have real tubes. I used to use a Pod, but strangely enough, I've opted for a V-Amp 2, the Behringer version... it's quite a bit brighter than the Pod, and I find that on keyboards, I prefer it. I tweak it a *lot* every time, for different sounds, and I usually mix it with the straight signal, using rather heavy EQ as well. I also reprogram sounds quite a bit on the Kurz. In this particular case, I VASTed the original Rhodes sample to make it more dynamic, then I mangled the Wurlitzer sample to make it even nastier, and added/crosfaded it at high velocities only (as an added layer), but not too prominent. I've found that this treatment fits my playing style and the response of my Fatar 2001 very well.

¾
My favorite Electric Pianos are: 1. Hohner Pianet 2. Wurlitzer Electric Piano 3. Yamaha CP-70b 3. Rhodes 4. Baldwin Electro-Pro 5. Helpensteil Upright My favorite Electronic Pianos are: 1. ARP 16-voice Electronic Piano 2. RMI Electra-Haprsi 368x 3. Cordovox electronic piano In a sub-category, I also love the Hohner Clavinet and in fact at one time had about a half-dozen of them. Three were in playing condition, the others were for parts and sacrifice to the keyboard gods. I keep meaning to try one of those new DX-7 electronic pianos but never get around to it. Are they any good? the only good signature is the one on a cheque or a confession

ksoper
I've owned a Rhodes and hated every minute of ownership. Rayz Rhodes in the QS8 was pretty damned good, but the all-time champ of currently available EP emulations (for me) has got to be the Scarbee Rhodes for Gigastudio. It's amazing and has appeared on every recording I've played on since buying it. "It's just that good." k. 9 Moog things, 3 Roland things, 2 Hammond things and a computer with stuff on it
