How come the baseball thread has so few pages?

Doesn't anybody like baseball? The football thread has 37 pages, the hockey thread has 14 pages, the basketball thread goes on forever. But the baseball thread has only 4 pages. I know its a boring game, but these playoffs have been very good.

If the KB forum is any indication of what the larger society thinks, baseball is in some serious trouble.

Where I used to work, out of a workgroup of about 15 guys, I was the only one who watched baseball. And if the Marlins aren't playing, I could care less. Baseball must not be in trouble, because people still go to (most of) (except in Florida) the games, but it's not looking like a growth sport. I know people who were very bitter about the strike that killed the World Series, and that was the end of it for a lot of people. It's popular for such people to complain about the greedy players, but it's the players that people go to the parks to see, and I don't understand why there's so much sympathy for the billionaire owners who don't want to pay the players in line with the golden eggs they produce. Oh yeah, I remember why- billionaires own the newspapers that tell us what to think.

Baseball is in serious trouble. Fewer and fewer kids play it--especially in a pick-up style. Baseball was a great radio sport. When I was growing up, there weren't that many games on TV, but every game was on radio. (I was very lucky to have the great Harry Kalas doing those games.) Who listens to the radio at home today?

More important, in this quick-cut MTV attention-span-of-a-gnat-world today, especially after watching hoops or football, baseball looks like it's in slow motion.

"And the pitcher shakes off the sign..... checks the runner.....lobs it over to first. The runner gets back easily.....pitcher gets the sign.......delivers..........ball two. (The batter steps out of the box, adjusts his batting gloves, spits, wiggles his crotch, digs his back foot in while holding his hand up to the ump, then steps into the box.) The pitcher gets the sign........and the batter steps out of the box......it's still a 2-0 count, scoreless game here in the second..........the fans are starting to do the wave..........and now the pitching coach is slowly making his way out of the dugout........" :bor::bor::bor:

I enjoy going to a baseball game more than a football or basketball game. But, the baseball strikes left me bitter. I now go to minor league games, but not major league games. When football or basketball players go on strike in the middle of the season and threaten or force cancellation of the playoffs you will probably see those threads shrink as fans get angry and move to another sport.

Baseball is the only sport I give a damn about really. It's completely different from other sports in so many ways. Yes, the strike sucked. Yes, I was mad. But at the end of the day I still love the game and I still want to see the best players playing it.

Baseball is definitely in trouble. Ever since the first strike, the fan base has dropped tremendously. Less and less American kids are choosing baseball as their primary sport as was the case with Little League not so many years ago. Fans are sick of the whiny millionaire syndrome that's so pervasive in pro sports today but seemed to originate in baseball. And, more recently, fans are sick of wondering what part steroids had in the recent slew of hitting records.

I like going to a game, but watching on TV is somnambulism-inspiring (IMHO) compared to football, hockey or basketball. And yeah, this is a particularly exciting playoff season. But if it keep heading in this diection, there may not even be a Baseball thread here for next season.

Another thing is the stadium taxes that cities are blackmailed into passing to build new stadiums so that they can "keep" the team that resided in the city for the past 50+ years. Cincinnati with though this with baseball and football. They charge a tax to people who don't even go to the games, then the franchise is able to pay stupidly high contracts to players. I wish every city would unite and say No more taxes to support sports franchises.

The best way to do this is to stop going to the games.

You're not likely to see that from football, because its owners are able to come to a fair settlement with its players. It's a much better-run organization than baseball, and that's the root of the trouble: bickering, disunified, greedy, common-sense-lacking ownership.

Baseball is a slower-paced sport; why would a thread associated with it move any faster than the sport itself?

Well I have been reading that the ratings for FOX and ESPN this post season have been up dramatically so far, so that's a good sign. I'm still spending plenty of money going up to Yankee Stadium so they still have me as an avid fan. Going to see another game tonight in the Bronx which is well worth my money. That's my two cents though.

GO YANKEES!!! (Cubs and Sox don't deserve a title)

While not a big fan, I will agree that the playoffs have been supurb, very exciting!

The Cubs seem to embody what playoff baseball is all about right now! Got to start checking on the other series as well. Good stuff!

TROLL . . . ish.

The Yankees are probably the only professional sports team that can spend an entire season with everyone wondering "what's wrong with them?" even while compiling the best regular-season record in the major leagues. 101 wins - what's wrong with them?? lol
