Markyboard
Sniped a Wavestatin A/D(second one) off of Ebay last week with 5 sec to spare. I've been trying for about 3 months to get the latest PROMs (OS version 1.25) for my current Wavestation A/D. There is a really annoying bug when used with Sounddiver with earlier versions. It requires a system dump of the whole RAM 3 memory every time you save a single Patch or Performance. I tried for several month to get new PROMs($140 - yikes) from Korg. Just when I thought I was finally going to get them their exclusive parts distributor (Parts Is Parts ) called to tell me they received the wrong ones. After many phone calls with different stories being told depending on who you talk to, it ends up the PROMs are no longer available. What was really wierd was I could buy the PROMs from an electronics distributor thinking I would send them to Korg to burn. According to Korg they no longer have the PROM burner/software to support these older devices. So I found someone on Ebay with the latest version and swaped PROMs with my original(better display and condition). Also got a 4 bank RAM card with it (cool). And thats my latest upagrade. I'll be selling this recently acquired A/D with my old PROMs(most people couldnt care less) on ebay in the near future along with my WS EX. rylos
Sniped a Wavestatin A/D(second one) off of Ebay last week with 5 sec to spare. You're lucky the other guy either didn't want it as much, or was a fool for not realizing he could have simply put in his highest desirable bid days earlier, and still beat your last-second bid if his limit was higher than what you were bidding. In other words, if you were bidding a hundred bucks at the last possible second, and he'd already put in a high bid of two hundred a day earlier, he'd get it. No matter when you bid. Timing has nothing to do with it, it's merely who has the highest bid placed. The only time sniping "works" is when you're bidding at the last second with another guy that also didn't put in his highest amount already, with the hopes that somehow he could "beat" somebody by sniping. Congratulations on your good luck. A lot of those old ROM burners are still out there, so the ROMs you just got could be copied, now that you've got a set to copy from. What are the numbers off the chips? A lot of ROMs can be copied by guys that run arcade game routes, as they routinely copy ROMs to keep the old games running. Been there, done that. "shit" happens. Absolutely true - the key part is you have to have the desired ROM (actually PROM) to begin with. I work for Boeing(old Hughes Aircraft) and I used to burn PROM/EEPROMs etc for test equipment and flight units. It crossed my mind to buy the spare blank PROMs and try to find someone with the right version and WILLING to yank out their PROMs, send them to me so I could copy them the next time I was in LA. The PROMs probably cost $70 for the pair(I'm guessing) based on Korgs $140 quote. Didn't seem too feesible or worth it. As to bidding on ebay, you are correct. However everyone has a maximum in mind when they go for something. I ended up paying more then I wanted to and I've seen WS A/Ds go for 20% less then what I payed. But it is the first (only) one I found with the 1.25 software so I was willing to stretch (and it had the memory card which I'll keep). In my mind there is no advantage to bidding early as it just gives someone more time to reconsider and possibly submit their "new" maximum bid. All auctions (real-life & online) seem to always boil down to psychology in the end... the key part is you have to have the desired ROM (actually PROM) to begin with. Maybe you should make a backup set? And putting a better version in the unit you sell might make it a better buy. Unless it ends up taking too much effort to track down someone with the burner.
