petros
Anybody tried "Stylus" or "Atmosphere" by Spectrasonic? It sounds pretty darn good on the Scarbee "Mango Kid" Rhodes demo track, the background drum and pad parts are Stylus and Atmosphere. passionmax
Yo atmospher is probably the best plugin vsti i have ever heard. It is better than most synths. I am not familiar with stylus. Get atmophser. it is awesome. the only draw back is the load time on the sounds. it is like a sampler. some patches are larger files and they take longer to load. the smaller ones load real fast goodluck
BP3
I have both. I have no regrets whatsoever.
Dasher
Passionmax has hit on the only real problem with Atmosphere- long load times. As far as unique sounds, there is very little I have not heard before (I've been doing this a LONG time,) but the patches are uniformly high quality, and the real power is that you can edit them a fair amount to make them your own. Dasher It's all about the music. Really. I just keep telling myself that... The Soundsmith
Soundscape Studios.
Yes, all three of the current Spectrasonics stuff is awesome. I just did a radio spot using Stylus and Trilogy. Atmosphere is also great. You need about 3GB of HD space for each of these, so make sure you can handle the space requirments before buying. schmoron13
I have trilogy and I LOVE IT, but here's a question for stylus: how does it differ from reason's drum editor/loop player, or from sonar's cyclone (the two drum "machines" I have)? I'm curious, but I haven't heard how stylus "works?"
burningbusch
Stylus works on the same general principle as the REX stuff: loop chopped up then driven by MIDI notes, ascending chromatic scale. You can preview the loop within the plugin at a set tempo, then call up the chopped loop and corresponding MIDI file. Take note of the name "Stylus." Most of the loops are in a hip hop, R&B, etc. Lo-Fi vien. This is not rock and roll. Busch.

Phil B
Originally posted by hangee_77: Do you guys recommend FM7 over the Atmosphere? Hanjaya C.They are really two completely different programs. FM7 is a synthesizer incorporating FM synthesis (and some subtractive synthesis elements) that goes way beyond what the Yamaha DX7 was capable of - especially its programming interface. If you want to synthesize sounds from scratch and have control over every element in the sound (and you like the sounds FM7 can make) then FM7 is capable, Atmosphere is not. If you want a (huge) collection of some incredible samples of pads and (some) leads and (some) strings and want control over them in an engine that is light years beyond what sample disks historically would give you out of the box, then Atmosphere is capable, and FM7 is not. neonjohn
Atmosphere is truly phenonmenal. The sounds are marvelous and it's very flexible. It's become my favorite synth, and I've had many over the (too many) years. And at $400, I would recommend it highly. It's well worth the load times, as long as it doesn't overtax your computer. Dasher
And, I assume, Scarbee Rhodes and Basses? Nice groove. Dasher It's all about the music. Really. I just keep telling myself that... The Soundsmith
petros
So Stylus is a large library of 2 bar, 4 bar and 8 bar clips (recordings) of real drummers playing? I assume there are also loops of drum machines? And yes, those are Scarbee Rhodes and Bass used in the demo (above link). Spectrasonics has a great bass collection too. Roland borrowed from it with there "Bass & Drums" expansion board.
MusicaL
Reading about Stylus, it seems to emphasize hip hop type dance beats. Is it useful for other genres, such as rock, blues or jazz? Soundscape Studios.
I just did a spot tonight for WFAN 660 NYC with Stylus and Trilogy. I'd love to post it, but am very frustrated at trying to post my stuff. I just need it to be simple, ya know. Can anyone help?

neonjohn
Soundmeister- Sorry I didn't reply sooner; life is crazed right now. . . why do kids ALWAYS get sick during your absolute craziest work times??? I'm running Atmosphere in DP4.1, on a Mac G4, Dual 867, with 2 GB RAM. It runs like a charm, even in 32 Bit mode. I also run it on a G3 800mHz Laptop. It also runs fine, though sounds do take a second or two to load. This machine only has 384MB RAM, and will occassionally bog down if I load it up too much.
