RABid
When you buy a workstation or groove box do you prefer built in sampling or do you find it a useless expense? Ive heard people really complain about the Roland Fantom because sampling was not included. Now you can only buy the sampling version. The Triton, Motif, and Kurzweil all have sampling. So does Rolands latest beat box, and the Yamaha beat box. To me this is a waste. I prefer to have a single dedicated sampler, or to use software. If they made a Roland MC-909 without sampling for a couple hundred less I would be interested. That brings another question. How much does sampling or sample playback add to the cost of a ROMpler? Robert Post number 3000. I talk a lot, but I dont come close to Mr. South or Mr. Bryce. This post edited for speling. Rod S
It depends - if the sample can be used as a source for the synth engine (instead of a sample from the internal ROM), than yeah, I'm game. Like the Kurzweils, for instance. This is cool, and really expands the synth's power. But if it's just a sampler to load sounds and trigger from the keyboards, it's a waste. The CS6x has that - never used it. I see a lot of people complaining on user forums about only having 4meg of sampling RAM. Tough to say what percentage of people use it. You do talk a lot, you joined almost a year after I did Korg Kronos X73 / ARP Odyssey / Motif ES Rack / Roland D-05 / JP-08 / SE-05 / Jupiter Xm / Novation Mininova / NL2X / Waldorf Pulse II MBP-LOGIC American Deluxe P-Bass, Yamaha RBX760
DanS
I was slightly interested in checking out the Triton, but the sampling put me off. I had a DSS-1 a number of years ago, and never sampled anything with it. What a waste of coin that anchor turned out to be. What we record in life, echoes in eternity. I prefer having sampling included mainly because the most efficient, cost-effective way to create new timbres is to layer onboard sounds with sounds based on new, externally loaded waveforms. With the Kurz it goes beyond simple layering. You can do significant synthesis and sound-shaping with any waveforms you load into it. Really the only thing you need for sample playback on the Kurz is RAM. The newer model K2500 and K2600 use common and affordable EDO and Fast Page SIMMs. You don't need the sampling option to play back samples on the Kurzweil, so there is no extra expense in that regard. ~Peter Schouten Pyramid Sound Productions Sounds and SCSI Expansions http://www.pyramid-sound.com
RABid
It is hard to believe how Roland implimented sample RAM. Maximum sample RAM - 256. Maximum memory card size for storing what is in RAM - 128. Basically you have to store what you have in memory to a computer through USB. I do have to give them credit for one thing, the V-Synth does do nice things to loaded samples. Robert This post edited for speling. I'm so used to the Kurz, it's hard to think of synths and smplers as two separate things anymore!
