Today, I officially joined the Old Farts Club - I turned 50. Half a century! :freak: I even got my first piece of junk mail from AARP. (Man, they're trolling early for members. Next they'll go after the 40-something crowd.) To mark the occassion, I drove to Vegas a few weeks ago and bought myself my first B3. That almost makes getting old worth it.

30 and 40 never bothered me. When I turned 20 I was depressed for weeks. I am not sure what 50 will be like, but I hope to find out some day.
My bummer birthday was 29. Don't ask me why but the idea of turning 29 just brought me down big time.

Fifty is not so bad. I'm fortunate in that I don't look my age. I dropped 30 pounds in the last year and am working out so that I am in better shape than I've ever been. That, and I got a B3 and Leslie for my birthday so whoo-hoo, I'm 50 and loving it. :D

I'll pass on that. No offense to forum members who live in Vegas, but I can't stand the place. I have to spend two weeks there every year for the NAB trade show and my ex's parents live there so I went 3-4 times a year for about ten years. I find nothing appealing about smoke filled rooms with flashing lights, noise and busty women with low cut tops that distract me from the fact that my wallet is quickly being emptied. (I take that back; I do appreciate the busty women part. :D )

Jimmie,

Maybe not Vegas (never been there, so I can't judge), but it's definitely the right time to have some fun!!

Side note: The guitar player and drummer in a group I'm playing with are 55 and 56, respectively, and they're playing better than ever! (They are legends on their instuments in my country)

Bottom line:

H A P P Y B I R T H D A Y ! ! ! !

Jim,

Happy Birthday!!!

Welcome to the club. Look at the bright side ... well, there's no bright side, but in only a few years you can receive a senior citizen's discount!

No guitarists were harmed during the making of this message.

In general, harmonic complexity is inversely proportional to the ratio between chording and non-chording instruments.

I'm 61, recovering from last night's lounge gig, just got my gear un-packed and set up, working through the haze with my 2nd cup o' coffee...when I came across your posting. It made my morning! Thanks for the chuckle!

So what was the first act you got to see? I must be nice to have been in your prime during the days of Monk, Bird and Jelly Roll Morton.
Ouch. I'm not that old. Jeez.

The first "real" concert I went to was Vanilla Fudge with Steve Miller as the opening act. I believe it was in 1968 when I was 15. Before that I went to a few events a DC area radio station, WPGC put on where groups lip synced their current hit. I believe the first one I went to included the Box Tops doing The Letter.

Linwood, thanks again for holding the B3 aside for me. It's become a fixture in my life. I must have spent 15 hours a day on it last weekend. I'm still not ready to share it with my neighbors, but it sounds surprisingly sweet (make that bitchin') through my B4 software's Leslie.

The AARP stuff really hurts. In a few years people are going to start describing us as "spry". :(

Happy Birthday! 50 is a great birthday..and as my dad used to say "consider the alternative." Welcome to Groovetown - listen to W. Becker's [steely dan] Slang of Ages. You are officially able to relate to such things. And a B3! Makes the wait worth it! I'm sneaking up on 60 (11-2-1943) and as long as I can still play, that's enough. Recovering from the gigs is more of a project. I can relate to unpacking the car the next day. Life is good. Happy Birthday!
