Johnny Cash's new album

I picked it up a few days ago.It is a very intresting album. It's got only vocals, acoustic guitars, and some piano and keys.It has such a haunting quality to it(of course IMO Cash's voice has that anyway)with the overall sound and the song selection. It seems like it is his good-bye record. It's got 2 or 3 new songs, one of which is based on the book of Revelations. The rest is all covers."Desperado","Danny boy","Bridge over troubled waters","In my life","Personal Jesus".Very strange record but very effective,if that's what he had in mind.I was curious if any of ya'll had heard it and if ya'll got the same vibe as I did?

I heard the "Personal Jesus" cut on 90.9 "The Bridge" (CMSU's station)...I was listening, thinking "this is quite weird" and then, thinking..."This guy sounds rather like Johnny Cash"...and then hearing the announcer say "That's Johnny Cash". Whoa. Different. A departure from the usual Johnny Cash, which I'll signal as a good thing...I think it's good for artists to be a bit unpredictable. I've always liked Johnny Cash anyway...

I heard the cut "In My Life" on NPR the other day. Man, his voice sounds rough, lately. But the feeling in it gave that song a new depth. Would love to hear the rest. Whitefang
I started out with NOTHING...and I still have most of it left!

Yeah Tedster, that tune has John Frusciante (sp) from the Red Hot Chilli Peppers playing guitar on it.It is very weird and cool."Desperado" has Don Henley singing back up on it.And I think Tedster, you would enjoy"In my life",being the Beatle fan that you are.I think Fiona Apple sings back up on that one.Check it out if you get the chance. :D

Whitefang ,check it out the name of the album is"American Recordings:The Man comes around".The Voice is pretty rough,he is really showing his age too.It really is worth a listen though.I think he recorded it in his home studio. It has a very intimate vibe.More powerful than a 10 peice band sometimes,if you know what I mean.

Yeah, I'd like to check it out. Mr. Cash is like a living legend to me. I remember seeing him and Willie on that "Storytellers" on VH1, and thinking "Man, if I had to pick two guys I would love to sit around and listen to 'em B.S. and pick and sing old tunes, those guys would be it, hands down. Neither one of 'em have great singing voices, and neither one are guitar gods, but they're like icons, y'know? And, what is ultra cool, is that, although basically country performers, they're idolized by folks in all genres of music. The real deal, so to speak.

It is weird all theis Johnny Cash activity lately... I was watching his biography at the gym the other day, remembering that his Folsom album was one of the first I heard as a child. My mom used to sing Egg Sucking Dog to me when I was little. This guy is an icon, and I think he is just about to check out. Anyhooo, the American Recordings with Delia on it is awesome...I need to get the new one. I have an older remaster of his real early stuff, and it is amazing how much power his voice has....

Well Tedster I could not agree more about hangin with the two of them. But I have to disagree about the guitar god part.I mean Willie has such a signature sound, you knows it's him with the first note he hits. There are alot of technically better guitarist, but there are very few that have that guitar voice if you will that is istantly recognizable.George Harrison,Eric Clapton,John Lee Hooker to name a few there are some more and Willie is one of them. :thu:
