logic and G3 or G4

Hello all,

So I need to buy a mac and Logic and get into the whole computer world. Here's the question......the newer 900 mhz G3 ibooks seem to be pretty happening and a lot cheaper than the G4. I'd love to get some feedback on using this high processor speed G3 for Logic vs. the G4. Is it doable? Will I have problems? I want to be able to run Logic and the EXS24 sampler with soft synths, the whole deal. I'd love anybody's thoughts who knows computers or has Logic experience. Thanks!

Jeff

I can't tell you how Logic will perform on a G3, but it will definitely perform better on a G4. There are certain performance enhancements on the G4 that Logic (and all its software instruments, and probably any commercial softsynth or sampler) is optimized to take advantage of. This means more instances of EXS, more programs running at the same time (plug-ins or Rewire instruments), and better audio performance. Hopefully, someone with an iBook can chime in with their experience.

I know people using Logic on the most uptodate G3 iBooks without any problems and with speed. But...

Wait with buying anything until OS X 10.3 kicks in. Also, the G4 (titanium) powerbooks are soon to be updated and I guess the G3 iBook updates are planned for quarter 4.

OTOH, everything you buy now is old tomorrow...

If you were planning to use MIDI only, a G3 would be more than fast enough. But when you start getting into soft synths, soft samplers, and audio tracks, you need as much processing power as possible. But even more important - YOU NEED A LOT OF RAM.

Buy as much RAM as you can afford. Fill the machine to its limits if possible. It's difficult to add RAM to a laptop later on (easy for desktops, though).

The Black Knight always triumphs!
