Ski 1642606170
http://www.ex5tech.com/Pics_Misc/Evolutionaries_promo.jpg Evolutionaries • 2003 Evolver User Forum Soundset • rev1 For any of you Evolver owners that don't regularly visit either the Evolver forum at EX5Tech or the Evolver Yahoo group... It's finally here. Three full banks of fresh new sequences and patches for the Evolver (that's 384!), all created by members of the Evolver online community. This isn't just about quantity, though... there's some stunning quality in this soundset too, and lots of it. The "announcement" topic at EX5Tech can be found at the following link: URL=http://www.ex5tech.com/ex5ubb_cgi/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic&f=23&t=000035 Here is a direct link to download Evolutionaries: Evolutionaries 2003 (rev1) (5.9 mb) And here is a direct link to a copy of the demo mp3: The Evolutionary (1.2 mb) (BTW, for any of you that aren't familiar with our releases at EX5Tech, this is all FREE.) It was an immense amount of fun, and a great honor to compile all these sequences and patches, and package them for release. I'm confident you'll like them as much as I do. Thanks to everyone at EX5Tech and the Evolver Yahoo group. Special thanks to the twelve programmers/authors of the Evolutionaries sounds (listed below). Very special thanks to Ravi, Stefan, and of course, Dave Smith. Evolutionaries: Riccardo Coen (Zinoff) Don Gothard (Don) Gary LaRocco (Mr. Rock) Paul Nagle (Paul) Kevin Paisley (Spectralab1) Robert Shanks (Synthlab) Ravi Sharma (Noision1) John Swana (Swanoid) Stefan Trippler (DocT; DrTrippler; Bluescreen) Mark Vann (Linuxmanvan) Craig Wiper (Mesadude) Tim Ande (Ski) Enjoy! Ski 1642606170
Oh no! Flooded? Did you lose any gear, and is the insurance paying up? Best of luck, and hope you get everything back to normal soon. Ski www.ex5tech.com

Ski 1642606170
Hey, glad to hear there was no damage to any of the important stuff! Maybe it's time to go with a tile floor rather than carpet! Hope you get everything settled soon, so that you can plug in the Evolver and try out this sound set. Due to the community effort involved, I think it's excellent. There's a great variety of style and sound within. I expect that a lot of the sequences and patches will make it into the "version 2" presets - replacing some of the stinkers that Dave got from me! Ha! Magpel
Ski, I've been synthing and sequenicng for a long time, but I'm still wildly inexperienced when it comes to loading banks and patches through the comptuter. What is the recommended method for loading these new patches? I'd love to be able to load individual patches rather than entire banks. Would you just use a sequencer for this or some other utility? Finally, is there such documentation with the sound collection (perhaps I should just take a look, huh? ) Check out the Sweet Clementines CD at bandcamp
Ski 1642606170
Here's what I'd recommend in this case: "Evolutionaries" is a FULL three banks of 384 patches/sequences, so I wouldn't recommend loading them a few at a time. Back up all your own work first by dumping the entire contents of your Evo's program memory to disk. Then load the entire "Evolutionaries" soundset. I think "Evolutionaries" has decent documentation, but it doesn't contain instructions on how to load files into your Evolver. Basic instructions are in the owners manual. Some very detailed instructions for PC users can be found in the following discussion topic at EX5Tech: Using MIDI-OX to Save & Load Evolver Patches Once you've previewed all the "Evolutionaries" patches and sequences, you'll then probably want to put together a collection of all YOUR favorite stuff. You can't just throw a SysEx file with three banks of sounds into your sequencer and pick and choose which sounds you want to load. At this point, you're going to have to do one of two things. 1) Get a patch librarian for your Evolver. 2) Learn just a little bit about the file format (namely, the bits that indicate the beginning and end of a single patch within a SysEx file). With a hex editor, you could then copy/paste the desired patches into a separate file to load into your Evolver. You'd also be able to learn how to change what bank and program number they'd load into. Number 2 isn't really hard, but I don't recommend it if your not a DIY kind of person. Getting a librarian is easiest. Hope that helps! Ski www.ex5tech.com
Magpel
Very helpful. Helpful, thy name is Ski! It sounds to me like MIDI OX is an adequate way of loading individual patches as long as I can work around the potential problems arising from the patch number being saved with the patch. Ski 1642606170
MIDI OX is an outstanding general purpose MIDI utility. However, it's only going to be good for loading individual patches if you have a SysEx file that ONLY CONTAINS a single patch. It still isn't going to let you pick and choose a single patch out of a SysEx file that contains multiple patches or an entire bank or banks. At least, not in one step. Does that make sense? Without resorting to using a separate hex editor and file splitter utility, I *think* you might be able to use MIDI OX's SysEx display window to view the raw contents of a big SysEx file, then copy/paste just the patch you want into another window, edit the bank/patch number, and then send it to the Evolver. Don't hold me to that, though, as I haven't tried it, but I think it's doable. Honestly, though, I think you will really have a much easier time if you just get a librarian like MIDI Quest. Ski 1642606170
Magpel - Mr. Rock over on the Evolver Yahoo group and EX5Tech kindly reminded me of something I'd forgotten about. He programmed a simple little utility that will let you change the bank and patch number in a SysEx file that contains a single patch. I think you might find it useful. You can download it from the files section at the Evolver Yahoo group (http://groups.yahoo.com/group/dsi_evolver/) Ski www.ex5tech.com
Ski 1642606170
IMPORTANT UPDATE The "Evolutionaries" Soundset has been updated to "rev1". The revision includes several fixes to Mr. Rock's sequences (which lacked Clock Div and BPM data), an improved demo (timing of sequence switches was tidied up), and a much relaxed license. Even if you've already downloaded Evolutionaries, please download the revision. It's well worth the time, especially for the cool sequences from Mr. Rock that now sound "right"! It is not a commercial release, a demo, or trialware, or shareware. Enjoy! Ski www.ex5tech.com
Magpel
Hey Ski, I went throgh the whole drill tonight--grabbing MidiOX, downloading evolutionaries, discovering I need to update my windows installer to install MidiOx... But thanks to your guidance, it all worked fine. I backed up my patches, loaded the whole new soundset, and just finished a quick swing through evolutionaries. I like what I'm hearing. I'm especially pleased with some of the lead sounds, which I consider to be kind of an inexplicable weak point of the factory presets--well, not weak, per se, just under-represented. Some of these new leads are really fine. Too much to evaluate after so brief a try out, and this close to bed time, but I did want to say thanks for your guidance. You are a uniquely generous and knowledgable presence in this and other synth-specific communities, and I really appreciate that. -John Check out the Sweet Clementines CD at bandcamp
Ski 1642606170
Hey, John, glad it worked out OK! Regarding the lead sounds in Evolutionaries vs. the v1 presets, I agree. A lot of the leads in Evolutionaries have made it into my bank of "keepers". In particular, I like Stefan's "PhatSync", Paul's "Feed the Octopus", and Ravi's "Sync Lead". I like my "Tubulator Evo", too! Thanks for the kind words. - BTW, does anyone know of a simple freeware or shareware SysEx utility that works with Mac OS9?
