dave-G
ARP 2600... or does it have to be something in current manufacture? -dave DAVE GREENBERG SONOPOD MASTERING
Magpel
Probably something like a Korg MS2000. Lots of knobs, a fair amount of programming flexibility to grow on (IIRC), and a bias toward blipping and beeping. Check out the Sweet Clementines CD at bandcamp
RudyS
i heard some music by a friend of mine from Aphex Twin.I don't know what gear the guy used but i can get serious noises out of his boards. Also heard he did cricuit bending to get the freaked up sound. Rudy

M Peasley
Lotsa people who like to mangle samples use Kurzweil K2xx keyboards. The VAST dsp functions offer a universe of options for sound shaping and sample manipulation. Also has some virtual analog features, 'tho not the best around, but still pretty durn good. The K2600 has the great KDFX effects built in. K2000 effects are pretty poor, altho' still usable when you want a little dirt and noise with your effects. dilbert
Assuming it's bleeps and bloops and boings.... As a vintage synth, I'd recommend the Arp Odyssey. The Roland SH-101 also is a good older synth. The new Microkorg seems to have some good sounds.
progfusion74
If you don't play keyboards you might want to try Kontakt (software). Sound-mangling is its biggest strength http://www.indiegrooves.com/dnm/images/dnm_small.gif My Blog
burningbusch
I think the Roland V-synth was designed for this purpose, if it's within your budget. Busch.
