NFL survival pool

Yes, that's right - it's that time of year again...are you ready for some football survival pool?

For those of you who've never participated in or heard about one of these, the rules are simple - each week, you pick one team to win. No point spreads, just a win. If your team wins, you survive. If they lose, you're out. If they tie, you're out. If you don't get your pick in by kick-off time on Sunday, you're out. If you survive, you pick a different team the next week. Whoever is the last person in the pool wins.

One other small rule - you can only take each team once in a season; so, for example, if you pick the Buccaneers in Week 1, you can't use them again in any subsequent weeks. If you pick a team that you've already used...you guessed it - you're out.

The way that this pool normally works in real life is that there's an entry fee and the last person standing takes the whole pot. However, here on the forum, we just do it for fun - no money is involved.

If you've never played one of these and think it sounds easy, you may be in for a surprise...

Soooooooooo...who wants to sign up and play?

Easy. Ha. The first time we did this, the entire field was eliminated by, what, the 3rd week of the season? Anyway, I'm in.

In the spirit of Robert's joke, perhaps we actually could find someone who would donate a piece of gear for the prize. Jeff, you still loking to get that Alpha Juno 1 out of your life? Winner pays shipping?

I'd put it up for the prize in a heartbeat. Right now, it's leaning face-first against a wall in the corner, and is only disturbed by my son occasionally kicking it savagely for no apparent reason.

However, I'm concerned about the legalities of any online contest like that, as I'm sure would be Mr. Bryce and the MusicPlayer people.

So, let's keep it going as a friendly gentlemen's wager. By the way, I've done this with our esteemed moderator every year since 1997 or so. Always fun. One year, the pool lasted through week 11 or 12, which I think was the record. But yeah, most folks are out with the first big upset, usually near week three or four.

I'll play, but I think you should put up that Motif ES as the prize.
Agreed! But, if Dave doesn't want to part ways with it, I'm still in...

No, that's fine. Everyone can take the same team in a particular week and all get knocked out at once. ;)

I'm in, this sounds like fun. And for a bold prediction, Carolina will upset Tampa Bay in week 2. Stephen Davis is a stud and the Bucs cocky D won't give him due respect when preping for the game.

*Howard Zinn for President*

**Pilsner Urquell for President of Beers!**

That is absolutely the strategy for success, i.e., use your Bengals, Lions, and Cardinals wisely.

That's true, except unlike picking winning teams (which you can only do once during a season, i.e., once you've used the Bucs or the Raiders, you can't use them again), you can pick the same loser week after week. Eventually, they'll likely win and you'll be out. But you could conceivably pick whoever is playing Cincinnati all season long.

Then again, Cincinnati plays Arizona in week nine...who would you pick in that little exhibition of bottom feeders? ;)

Good point, Steve. Thanks...

On weeks where there's a Thursday game, ALL PICKS for that week need to be in by kickoff of the Thursday game.

If you miss making your pick...yep - you're out.

BTW - once the pool starts, I do not warn people about things like this, or picking the same team twice. You screw up, you're out.

We do keep a running record of who everyone has picked though, so you kind of have to be asleep at the wheel to miss that.

But if you pick one of those teams as a winner and survive you have a nice but small advantage over everyone else.

Since you only have to pick one team to win each week, it'll be likely that there is a more clear-cut winner of that week's schedule. Picking games with team parity is a large gamble.

In 1999, I was trying not to "waste my easy teams" early on, so I could spread them through the season. Big mistake, as Dave would probably tell you. So, in week one, I took the Eagles over the Cards...Eagles weren't nearly as good as they are now (5-11 that year). I lost that game 25-24 by a field goal with no time left on the clock, and got bounced in week one! D'oh!

I reserve the right to change my mind as the season wears on; but at this point, I'd take the Cards. Emmitt Smith has a better offensive line to run behind in Arizona than he did last year with Dallas; and the Bengals have yet to show me that they've found their mojo! :D

Best,

Geoff
