Phait
I love Fiona Apple and Lennon Murphy. Lennon plays piano but Fiona is much more a pianist than her. I doubt anyone has heard Lennon but she's kinda like Fiona but more hard rock - http://www.lennonmurphy.com I believe. So I'm wondering, anyone else you can suggest for me to give a listen to? *Note* I'm not into Bach and Mozart and stuff like that.
Dave Bryce
Great pianists? There are so many to choose from.... Tell us what kinds of music you like to listen to...and then, if you really wanna hear someone play the hell out of the piano, go and get Art Tatum's Solo Masterpieces. Start with Volume 1... dB ==> David Bryce Music • Funky Young Monks <==
Phait
I'll list some songs that I like the piano from, besides Fiona: Nine Inch Nails: "Something I Can Never Have", "Closer" (end melody), "La Mer", "The Frail", "The Wretched", "The Becoming", "The Perfect Drug".. Type O Negative: "Love You To Death" Cold: "She Said" The Cure: "Trust" (pretty much anything by The Cure) A Perfect Circle: "Over" (piano comes some time after the main melody) So basically I like certain upbeat piano i.e. "La Mer" but I dig the darker stuff. Gulliver
I think Phait likes a piano more in a song's context than as a pure solo performance. Ever heard about Bruce Hornsby? His songs aren't dark at all, but his piano playing is super tasty and stylish. I am back.

area51recording
A big second for Art Tatum! Also all the usual suspects- Chick, Herbie, Oscar, Bill Evans, Bud Powell, Monk, and on and on... Bob Green Area 51 Recording Studio P.S. NRBQ's Terry Adams is monsterous! Sounds to me like a cross between Monk and Jerry Lee...

Magpel
I don't think Fiona is a great pianist, but I'm wild about her second album, "When the Pawn..." Jon Brion's production, Matt Chamberlain's drumming, very sturdy, lively songs (though sometimes you might have to tune out the lyrics a bit). It's a really fine piece of work, maybe even an underappreciated masterpiece of sorts. ..And the grooves really are pianistic in nature, but they groove hard, (just check out Fast as you Can and Limp) just in case anyone thought piano pop had to sound like Five for Fighting. Krakit
Another recommendation for Art Tatum. Also, McCoy Tyner, Oscar Peterson, Herbie Hancock, Keith Jarret and Chick Corea. I name all of the aforementioned, with full knowledge that the original poster did not have these types of people in mind. Carl
Steve LeBlanc
Check out old Elton John and Billy Joel records (pre-1978)...both of those guys had incredible feel for pop/rock piano. Doesn't get any better really. I'll also second Bruce Hornsby...he's good. http://www.youtube.com/notesleb
Phil B
Originally posted by Phait: *Note* I'm not into Bach and Mozart and stuff like that.Phait!!! Don't give up yet! Well, Mozart, maybe, but Bach!?!? Glenn Gould's my favorite for Bach - the soundtrack to 32 Short Films About Glenn Gould is a good start actually. And Pierre Hantai doing Scarlatti's harpsichord sonatas (on a real harpsichord!) is pretty mind blowing.

Phait
She plays on the song "5:30 Saturday Morning" and "Asking You" - I just remember seeing her on MTV2 at a piano as well.. but I dunno, what I meant was.. Fiona Apple, Lennon Murphy (even if she doesn't play that much) - and all the other stuff I listed, that kinda mood/style is what I'm looking for. Phil B. I'm not worked up, lol if I was I'd probably say "And fuck mozart and bach" but no
Phil B
(Phait: I know, I was just kidding around too) I always liked the way Wilco uses keys, especially on Summerteeth.
Zeke Smith.
I hear that that Marissa Marchant chick is better than like, anybody. Or, everybody. At the same time. Seriously, the question would have to be style-specific so as to not make my head spin with possibilities. I would not have wanted to hear Glenn Gould play Fiona Apple. Or Fiona Apple play Bach, for that matter. Current live rig: Roland RD700SX, Hammond XK-3 with Leslie System 21, and Muse Receptor. Also a Nord Stage 76 other times instead. And a Roland FP-7 for jazz gigs. HOME: Kawai MP8 + a bunch of VI's.

Analogaddict
One of my favorite albums of lately is Tom Wait´s "Closing Time", his debut album from 1973. He plays really nice out-of-tune piano through the whole album. /J

Well i can recomment chroma key, but not really for the piano parts. Kevin Moore is a great musician. he uses a lot of samples and that kinda stuff and his music is very dark. i like it very much. But i don't think he has great piano parts in his songs. Rudy
RABid
No matter what kind of music one enjoys, everyone who likes piano should own at least one Yallowjackets CD. My favorite is the the self titled Yellowjacks with the yellow cover. Robert This post edited for speling. Zeke Smith.
I like Kevin Moore quite a bit, from the Dream Theater days on into his solo work, but I've always thought of him as an example of a really great synth player rather than a pianist. If we're talking strictly prog rock, I'd have to give Jordan Ruddess the edge for piano skillz, and I'm not sure I'm quite as thrilled with his arrangements and interpretation for piano as some are.
