Roland JV30 or XP10

Hello!

I'm form Buenos Aires, Argentina, and I'm new in the forum.

I have a Kurzweil PC88mx for using in live performance and I'm looking for a smaller, cheaper and portable keyboard to use in smaller shows and trials.

I would need good Rhodes sounds and pianos...

I was thinking to buy an used JV30 or XP10? I know the JV30 is a better made keyboard, but are the sound quality (pianos) in the same line of the XP10?

Any suggestion will be welcome...

Thanks,

Marcelo L.

I don't think the JV-30 or the XP-10 have good Rhodes or piano sounds, not authentic like the vintage instruments. Their piano and Rhodes sound digital, shrill and thin.

The Korg XD5, O1W or the Yamaha S03 or S30 have the better piano and Rhodes sounds. Or the SP Kurzweil.

welcome to the forum.

Xp-10 and vj-30 don't have a good piano and Rhodes sound (as said).

i would recomment the same as Dan (maybe even a xp-30). Or what petros said the Yam S03 or S30.

Petros, do you really think the korgs have a good piano??

I wouldn't go for the Korg X5d or 01w though, i think their piano is crap.

Well maybe they are useable in live situations

Marcelo,

welcome to the forum.

If you like Kurzweil, you might consider their new KME61 (I'm not sure if I have the name right). It's the keyboard version of the ME-1 MicroEnsemble, which I have, and it has excellent piano and Rhodes sounds, plus many others. In a sense, it's the successor to the PC88 soundset. Cons: the keys are not very strong. Alternatively, you could consider a MicroEnsemble (half-rack) MIDIed to any keyboard.

Also from Kurzweil there's the SP76 - much lighter than the PC88 (or the new PC2), the sounds are similar, I believe.

Other ideas: A Proteus keys, a Yamaha CS2x or CS6x.

If you mainly need Rhodes and have the money, you could consider a Nord Electro. Both 61 and 76 keys versions are very light, it has excellent Rhodes and Hammond. The weak link is the acoustic piano - it's very weak. What about an Electro plus a MicroEnsemble for pianos... :)

Mahrcelo, welcome!

First of all, what's your budget? If you only need good pianos and Rhodes and no synth stuff, a P120 or P90 (Yamaha) will do. The P120 has the best Rhodes emulator in a compact and relatively cheap package. But you're talking XP10, which is cheaper.

Other suggestions are an XP30 with a '70s keys plugin or a (second hand) Yamaha CS2x or CS6x. I have both the P120 and the CS6x and they are capable of great Rhodes, Wurli and clavinet sounds. Pianos on the CS6x suck.

Hey Superbobus, have you played dthe P90 Rhodes?

It's different than the P120 Rhodes, much more "Dyno" bell tone with an obvious switch point.

I like the darker more authentic vintage Rhodes EP2 sound in the P120.(I defeat Brightness, set Touch to Soft and select the Delay Effect to fatten it.)

Hey Petros, right before I packed up my p80 to ship it to its new home I tried your brightness suggestion on ep2. I moved the britghtness slider full left, set touch on hard to defeat the switchpoint and cut down the 'bark' with hard strikes of the key, and it seemed to improve the sound. Maybe that works on a p90.

Hmmm, than I don't regret buying a P120...

I used to own a JV35 which was the better version of the JV30 series. I thought this was a pretty crappy keyboard until I added the VE-JV-1 expansion board. This addition really brought that keyboard to life. I don't think the JV30 is expandable, so don't waste your money.
