Biggus
Gents (and non-gents ) Thinking of buying a Fatar/Studiologic SL-990 controller. Played it at me local Guitar Center, and felt pretty good. Nice price, too... How reliable are these things, especially if this board is going to be gigged out fairly often, and used in home studio? Anyone else using this model, or comparable model? Thanks in advance for the advice! "You can't enjoy yourself unless you're having fun."
David Loving
I have owned an 1100, and it was bullet-proof. "Forget it, Jake. It's Chinatown."
jeffbayson
I have an SL-880. Although it never leaves my studio, it has given me trouble. I have needed to replace the AC adaptor twice. You might say, "well, that has nothing to do with the keyboard," but I've never that problem with any other board. It's not like it will suddenly not turn on: it will start going haywire. Like, the volume will fluctuate wildly; it will change MIDI channels on its own; it will turn on, but will lock up. I've talked to other people who've had the same problem with the SL-880. I have no idea if that's an issue with the SL-990, but I just thought I'd warn you. I love the feel of this board, but I wouldn't use it live unless I brought three extra adaptors as backup. RABid
I heard stories and worried when I had a chance to get an SL-880 for a good price. After taking a chance there have been no regreats so far. To be honest I was happy when it powered up after being delivered from mail order. So far I have no problems but mine never leaves my house. I do like the feel and the SL-880 plus a rack unit is still much, much cheaper that most 88 note workstations. Especially considering the fact that the difference between 61 key and 88 key versions of Roland, Korg or Yamaha workstations may be $1000. I much prefer to buy the 61 key synth action version and sit it on top of the SL-990. Robert This post edited for speling. marino
I have a Fatar 2001. I rarely gig with it nowadays because it's heavy, but I did for 5/6 years; plus, it has been the main keyboard in my studio for the last 10 years or so. It never gave me problems either at home or on the road - and it's even not the model with the flight case built-in. The only time I had to open it, it was to change the internal battery, which lasted till last month. Hope this helps
Carlito
I got my SL-990 4-5 years ago. Although it was a display model, it never failed on me. Only used at home, though. Before that, I had a Studio-88, and a Studio 90 or 990, I don't remember.Great keyboards for someone who couldn't have spent $2500 or more for any of the other 88's available at that time. I think my love for Fatars is comparable to Skyy's love for the Casio's. Um! Maybe a little less.
David Loving
I did not mention the 2 sl 161's i had. They were bulletproof, too. Drop them, etc, no problem. All my Fatar controllers were very reliable and sturdy. If fact, I'm considering getting another sl 161 or whatever they call the 61 key controller these days. I never shoulda sold 'em. I had a very similar problem with my sl-880. The same type of problem you described here would happen when I would first turn it on. Sometimes turning it off and on again would help, sometimes I would have to do it several times before it would work properly. Since it only happened while turning the keyboard on i figured maybe it was a bad connection on the power button, so i opened it up and gave it a good spray of Caig De-Oxit. Problem solved, no problems whatsoever since.
