Borrowed topic - your 3 desert island SOFT synths

You are marooned on a desert island with a laptop and three soft synths. Which three soft synths would you most want to have? Don't worry about cross-platform issues; you can have both a Mac and a PC if necessary.

Are you saying that DB does not seem like the type of person to be, um, Logical?

GigaStudio

Reaktor

Z3ta+

I do need to say that the more VSTi's I get, the less I use Reaktor. It does most anything, but if I have a dedicated VSTi with the sound I want I always choose it before Reaktor.

1. Gigasampler

2. rgc:audio Pentagon I, my favorite subtractive style soft synth

3. Ah, this one is pivotal. I'm going to say Reaktor, which I don't presently own, because until I was marooned on this desert island, I never really cared to go so deep as to design my own ensembles, but now it might be fun to explore that level of Reaktor.

Not yet - waiting to get a new computer before I install this copy of Logic 6 sitting about two feet away from me, though... ;)

A few years back, I had DP, Vision and Logic all on my computer. I'd like to get Logic up and running again...after all, it can't hurt to be flexible...this doesn't mean I'll be giving up DP - I'd just like to expand my horizons.

I do have EXSP24 (which works as a VST plug). I'd like to get the full version so I can take advantage of the streaming feature. To get the full version, you gotta go Logic. Same deal with the copy of EVP73 - I want to be able to use EVP88.

Gigasampler

Moog Modular V

The new one which does harmonic resynthesis, when it's available (it's called 5000 something, I can't remember now).

runner-ups:

Vaz Modular

Reaktor

Kyma (if it counts as software)

Of course, I'll have to upgrade my computer - but this will be delayed again, since I recently bought still another synthesizer! :)

Is Reason that satisfying to use?

Interested in a product demonstration? :D

Hey! You might check REASON's sound and capabilities in my newest productions... "Dime tu Que Harás", "Centinela" and "Fuera de éste Mundo" . Sorry for the spam, just wanted you to know those songs were made entirely in REASON. I recorded the voices ReWiring it to Ableton's Live.

Thanks,

Geoff

I've owned it since it first came out. If the question was "If you could only use one piece of software, period, of any type ..." then I might choose Reason just because it is a complete package. Or, if the question was "If you could only spend $300 on music software what would you use?" then I might choose Reason.

I don't use it much. It is best at making pattern based music and good for constructing patterns to export to wave and turn into Acid files. But for every sound source in Reason there is a VSTi that sounds better, and full fledged sequencers do a lot more than Reason. But, for the price it is great. I don't mean to knock it because people make some good music with it. Stick in SonicRefill and a few other add on's and you can create a lot of music. It is just that I feel restricted if I start to create a song in reason.

I did not know you used Vaz Modular. I like that synt for making arps. It has a lot of life to the sound and a lot of snap. And are you talking about CA5000 from Calem Audio? I have been watching the development after picking up CamelPhat as an effect.

I don't really use VAZ modular - I've played with the demo, and I think it's one of the best sounding softsynths I've ever heard, especially the filters. I also programmed a few sounds for a studio that use it, and had great fun. I had the original VAZ monosynth, and that sounded good too - I sampled a couple of its sounds into my Kurzweil. When I'll have a good computer, VAZ Modular is near the top of my shopping list.

Yes, I was referring to the CA5000. I've been waiting for a good implementation of additive resynthesis + noise for the last 20 years, and this thing looks promising, at least on paper. You might remember a thread called "The resynthesis thread", which I started about one year and a half ago...
